Hi, the internet speeds available at my house are just unacceptable. As a result I am thinking of buying a mobile data router and putting a sim card in that. Quick question, for this to work would I need  a data only sim or could I use a normal sim card? Thanks for any help!

There is no difference between the simcards, only how they are set up in the providers HLR.

You should get something with A LOT of data included if possible as about 1 hour of streaming HD content (like Game of Thrones) will rack up about 670MB of data..

So depending on your needs and your internet usage, you should get a subscription that matches that so you dont get plucked for all your money.

An of course make sure that the provider you choose, supports higher speeds on their 4G network than usual.

Also be aware, that most often, Mobile Broadband providers are using a firewall that will only allow port to be opened inside -> outside, so you will not be able to portforward and you can have issues in some games with strict NAT.

Another thing to keep in mind is that most "unlimited" data plans are not. They will give you up to ~20GB of data per month before throttling you from 4G speeds down to 2G speeds which is about 1Mbit max.

I have found out before that "unlimited" means 1TB.

It could be different in the UK as I didn't initially realize that's where OP was from but here in the states pretty much every carrier says they will throttle you after 22GB of data or less depending on who you're looking at, some will throttle after just a couple of gigs.
