A few questions about changing case fans

hsjj3

It seems like the shops around me are selling 4-pin PWM fans.

So just to confirm, if I buy a 4-pin Noctua, can I make it work on a 3-pin motherboard connection, or is this impossible?

Impossible 4 pin doesn,t work on a 3 pin the other way around it will work.

Well, I'm receiving conflicting information. Will a 4-pin fan work on a 3-pin motherboard connection or not?

Guys, this is the configuration of my motherboard: http://www.manualslib.com/manual/418636/Dell-Inspiron-660.html?page=14#manual

Look right at the bottom, beside the 4 SATA connectors...there is an "empty" 3-pin socket. Is this usable for a fan header?

Also, item number 23 is my current Case Fan header...is that a regular size 3-pin socket, or a customized 3-pin socket? Cause, I am reading on the Dell forums that I cannot replace my case fan due to the fact that it is a specialized Dell fan, and if I do so, I will get an error while booting up.

Just listen a 4 pin fan header doesn,t work on a 3 pin the other way around it does just look for this when you buy a fan not that hard at all.

I understand as much. What I wrote above wasn't concerning 4-pins at all. Please address the question I posted.
