Symmetrical RAM, does it matter?

My main gaming rig used to have a single 8gb stick and my son's has a 4gb stick (DDR3 on both).

I bought 2X8gb sticks for my gaming rig and it made a fairly big difference.  I know many say 8gb is more than enough.  Tell that to my eyes tho that notice a better performance.  Dual sticks always better?

Anyways, I trickled down the 8gb to my son's computer.  One bank has 4gb and the other has 8gb.  A total of 12gb... duh.  I noticed better performance with the 12gb over when it was 4gb.  Another duh.  However, if I stick 2x8gb instead of the current 4&8gb, would I noticed a difference?

Broken machine time!

It depends on what the PC is used for. 4gb is the bare minimum these days, 8gb is slowly becoming the standard. If it's just games and web browsing (and movies/etc), you're probably fine with the 12. 16gb is the point where most people start to see diminishing returns

It all depends on how you use your PC. I was constantly filling up my ram when I was using 16gb so just upgraded to 32.

Mainly gaming.

I think the other guy is right.  The 2 8gb sticks I bought were probably faster than the single 8.  I noticed about 5-10fps increase on many games.
