LAN Party

RiceinPot

So i wanted to host a LAN party at my house for 3 people, but I don't know if my wifi can handle it. I know my wifi is dual band, and my router is a Verizon quantum gateway. I read something about port fowarding on game forums, but I'd rather not do that, mainly because i have no idea what it is. I am a complete noob when it comes to networking, so try to explain like you would to a 5 year old. Thanks in advance!

a 3 person LAN party shouldn't put  much strain on, if you think it might, grab yourself 3 Ethernet cables and plug directly from the router to the PC's

Pick up a 5 or 8 port switch like this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=12K-008X-00026

Hook everyone up to the switch using ethernet cables and then run a cable from the switch to the Verizon router so you all have internet access.

I have no idea how to reply on this forum, so I'll just do it here.

@riley mclinn a lan party is when you have multiple people playing together on the same network

@lurick do i absolutely need one of those switches? I havnt checked, but i think my router has enough ethernet ports for all 3 of us.

To reply, click on the arrow that kind of swooshes up and points to the left.

You don't need a switch if you have enough ports on the router for everyone but if you're far away from the router it can mean just running a single long cable instead of several.

Well the router is going to be right next to us, so it'll be fine.

Thanks for your help though, appreciate it.

Yah, if the router will be right next to you guys then just hardwire in with some cat5e cable, wifi and gaming generally don't do well under heavy load =/
