Hi,

A while ago I my PC would shut down without warning while playing games.

When I tried updating NVIDIA drivers yesterday, my PC shut down without warning. Next, when I ran Prime95 Blend test, around 5 minutes in, with CPU temp reaching around 82C, my PC shut down again without warning. Afterwards, my PC shutdown while idle.

I have a few questions:

1) Does the result of the Prime95 test indicate the CPU is the problem? Should I run Furmark to test the GPU?

2) How do I test the PSU? Is my PSU of good quality?

3) Does the shutting down during idle indicate the CPU has been damage from overheating? It was not under load.

4) What are the appropriate steps to take in addressing this issue?

Here are my specs:

CPU: AMD FX-6300

GPU: ASUS GTX 750Ti

Motherboard: ASUS M5A99FX Pro R2.0

PSU: Corsair CX500

RAM: Corsair Vengeance 2x4GB

Hard Drive: Seagate Hybrid Drive 1TB

Thank you so much for the help!

Use a program like Aida 64 and Hwmonitor to see youryour gpu temps.

Most likely a psu issue though if you want to test the psu you will need something like this:

http://m.newegg.com/Product/index?itemnumber=N82E16899705003

I have an Anet A8 as my project printer and a i3 MK3 for when I want things to work.

I extrude my own filament and haven't saved a penny yet.

My PC:

Spoiler

CPU: Intel i7 8700k

Motherboard: MSI Z370-A Pro

RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws V (2x8GB) DDR4-3200

GPU: GTX 1070 Founders Edition (OC'd)

Storage: 2x 2TB Seagate 5400RPM, 128GB ADATA SSD

Power Supply: EVGA Supernova 750w  B2

Cooling: Noctua NH-D15. 3 Intake Fans, 2 Outtake

Case: Fractal Design Define R6

Sounds like a heat issue. Critical temps for most intel cpus are 90c. I wouldn't be surprised if it was due to whatever horrible cooling solution you have.

My native language is C++

Critical or TJ? TJ which is when a computer will shut down to preserve itself is at 100°C for most Intel CPU'S 90°C is quite bad though.

your pc doesn't shut down from your cpu getting too hot, i ran my cpu at 99c and it only throttled, it didn't shut down, so that can't really be the case.

almost all hardware these days throttles, they don't really shut down

and to me it sounds like a psu issue :)

Yes they can shut down I had a friend who didn't isntall his cooler and his pc shut off because it got too hot

what cpu did he have lol?

and if you don't have a cooler at all, it will probably throttle so much until it just decides that it can't throttle down enough to keep it cool so it shuts off, i had a cooler with no fans :)

That is exactly what happened but he had an 8 core amd fx series cpu

It doesn't throttle (if it did, it is not noticeable). In any event, I cleaned some dust.

What makes the situation a PSU issue?

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet, but you're running a CX series, OP. They're known for having some issues. This being said, a sudden shutdown is still unusual.

 Motherboard MSI Z87 MPOWER
RAM DDR3, 16GB

GPU XFX R9 390x

Case Raidmax Vampire (Soon to be MasterCase Pro 5)

Yes. I'm considering upgrading to EVGA G2 750W.

However, I'm beginning to think its less a PSU issue. The PC was just idle and it shut down... Could the motherboard be damaged from overheating?

Very unlikely. Usually a full circuit shock would only cause that, or if... well, if you PSU was bad and had trouble translating to direct current lol. With the exception of readings on your CPU activity, I would guess it to be PSU or the supply you're plugged into.

You can also check in on your power saver settings- it's unlikely, but there are a few that will do an auto shutdown after an idle.

And yes, your PC can shut down from your CPU getting too hot, but it will usually be preceded by some weird behavior or an obvious amount of stress. To me, that would be unlikely in this situation.

What can happen with the power outlet?
