First Ever Gaming Build (970 vs 1070)

Looking to build my first ever Gaming PC in August of this year.

Seeing as how Nvidia has released specs about the 1070 I can't decide between the two.

I don't know if I'm going to game at 1080p or save up for 4k

I have already organized the parts I want and I only need advice on my: Motherboard, Case, and Power Supply

CPU: Intel i5-4690k

GPU: 970 or 1070?

Memory: Crucial 8GB 4x2GB

Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 7200RPM TB

CPU Cooler?

Thanks

Why buy a 4690k when a 6600k is a generation newer and slightly better?

Then, wait for the 1070 since it's out in a month.

EDIT: Actually, screw that, get an i5 6500 and a locked mobo (B150 or H170) and you'll be able to afford an SSD.

Ok, thanks for the feedback.

By any chance, do you know about 1080p monitors vs 1440p or something like that?

If you can spend $300 on a monitor, 1440p is almost always a better experience :)

I wouldn't build right now. Mid June is when all new GPUs will be out and you'll find the best value, whether that be AMD of Nvidia.

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

1080p is a lower screen resolution than 1440p. A 1070 should have no problem running 1440p with most modern titles.

Yeah like I said, I'll be building in August and I can't help but get ready and excited. When should benchmarks for the 1070 be out?

You can dump ssd and get a cheaper but lower quality case to save money BTW. PSU is also not a necessity its just better than a non modular non 80 plus...

No it's fine I just don't understand how you fit the SSD in there along with everything else.

Thanks though

Go for a Skylake build. No point in going for last gen hardware. Your best bet is to get a new spec in August when you are ready to buy everything.

Yeah the only reason I was going for the 4690k was a friend's recommendation

Thanks

If there was a big price difference then it would be worth it. Skylake isn't that much more expensive though if you look at pcpartpicker.

totally agree with the above post. I thought you might have already had one or you were getting a good deal. (P.S. In australia the 4690k is MUCH cheaper ($60))

i went the nex due to pricing, the only difference is that the g2 is fully modular and the nex is semi but i doubt he will be getting custom cables so this made more sense...

The NEX performs quite a bit worse in voltage regluation and ripple suppression - meaning that your components will have shorter useful lifetimes under its power. The GQ I quoted is much better ans $68 over at Amazon.
