So I replaced my xeon e5 1620v3 with a core i7 5820k.  I cant seem to get a stable experience. The system even freezes in bios.  I'm using a Seidon 120m to cool the chip.  The 5820k has the same TDP (on paper) as the xeon.  I'm wondering if the Seidon 120 just isn't enough cooler for the CPU.  When I look up other builds im seeing a lot of dual 120mm rads used for this CPU.  Thoughts?

Bios is set to optimal.  I've also wiped and reset manually.  So far there;s no change.

When I can monitor I'm seeing a temp of 20 to 28c in bios before it fails.  The last failure from a cold start was in about 90 seconds, which is why I'm looking at the cooler.    I just now ordered a Corsair Hydro Series H110i GTX.  Even if I have other issues, its time for a new cooler.  .....and i wanted one...

Those were both really excellent questions! Thanks!!!

It doesn´t seem like temps are the problem.

Which mainboard do you have?

Please quote me in any answers to my posts, so that I can read them easily and don´t forget about them. Thanks!

If it fails on 28C, then something is very wrong. A 5830k should not fail at all. It should just keep going up to 100C or something like that and then clock it self down to keep that temp as max.

I speak my mind, sorry if thats a problem.

Should be fine, if it worked with your Xeon too.

Which PSU do you have?

Looks like I'm one behind.  The f.22 update doesn't appear to cover anything I've changed, the 5820k was already supported.

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5123#bios

I'm going to fun a full memtest86 with the Xeon to see if I get any failures.  the memtest x86 I ran with the i7 showed failures, even on each individual stick of ram.  Thinking about this.... it should make sense that there was an issue with the mainboard, at least I think so.  The 5820k is a little beefier than the E5 1620v3.  Maybe the board is marginal and can't handle it.  I've never had a CPU that would post but then be this bad.  Usually a bad CPU either works or doesn't work.

I wonder what the odds of the mainboard failing when I swapped the CPU.  It was the least expensive x99 board when I picked it up.  I think I'd rather have a failed mainboard over anything else in the system.

I've gotten more wound up about than I have reason to.  i think I'm gonna take a break and find a frosty beverage.

Its nice to have a place to post this stuff.  Thanks folks!  :-D

Do you by any chance have ECC memory?

The 5820K dont support ECC memory, while the Xeon does. So that might be the problem.

I speak my mind, sorry if thats a problem.

  • 2 weeks later...

Ok, my new mainboard should arrive on the 31st.  I've also purchased a single new DDR4 DIMM  just in case my origonal 16GB kit is bad.  finally, I picked up a Corsair Air 540.  I made sure to ue the LTT Amazon affiliate link.  I know a case wont fix any technical issues.  It does help with the emotional scars of my main rig being down for a couple of weeks.  #firstworldproblems
