Hey guys!

So about 5 years I ago I bought my first gaming PC from iBuyPower. About a year ago I switched from Windows to a Mac because I really didn't play many PC games and personally like OS X better. Now will all the VR stuff coming out (especially the Vive) I began to wonder how much I'd need to upgrade to be able to play VR games on my old PC. I have listed the specs of it below and if you guys could give me some idea of what needs to be upgraded to get it read for VR that would be great!

CPU: Intel Core i7 980x Extreme Edition. 3.33 Ghz (Overclocked to 4Ghz) 6 Core Processor

GPU: Dual Nvidia GeForce 470 GTX in sli

RAM: 12 GB of DDR3 1600 Mhz. I didn't remember. It's four 3GB sticks.

Motherboard: Something made by Asus.

Power suppy: Some 1200W power supply.

Storage: None at the moment but I have a 7200 RPM hard drive, or an old SSD I could put in it.

Hopefully this is enough information, It's basically what I could remember off of my head. I'm hoping all I need to upgrade is my GPU(s). Anyways, I appreciate any help you guys can give me!

Why they hell did you get a PC with a 1,200W PSU in it? Are you running a city off that thing?

You will need a minimum GTX 970 or R9 390. Preferably a R9 390 over a 970. The 970 costs more and on average performs worse than the R9 390. Anything above a 390/970 is icing on the cake for VR.

You would also benefit from a new CPU. My i5 4690k beats your i7. So I would just go all out and buy a X99 Mobo and a skylake CPU. A 6600 or better imo because why not.

note a cpu upgrade is probably not required.

You have 5 year old fermi cards?

Your CPU is still alright for gaming, mostly just upgrade your GPU, but are you sticking to OSX? because you're extremely limited in game support

just wait for polaris/pascal to upgrade the GPU

though for VR you'll need a new CPU, probably an i7 6700, or heavily OC'd i5 6600k I guess, but I wouldn't really worry about VR just yet, unless you have a few thousand dollars lying around you don't like having

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

But I could just use my phone for VR porn, not interested in the gaming, wouldn't be able to use the vive in my shed anyways. and I'd rather not drop like 2K just for basic VR hardware
