A good editing PC?

Hey all! What would be a good video editing PC? I'm talking something that can handle an Elgato HD 60 1080P 60FPS recording off my ps4, and rendering said 1080p60 video in a software. My friend made this http://pcpartpicker.com/user/OnionRings/saved/mY2p99 he went low on the GPU because I don't want to game. Now I have a few questions.

1. How much does a GPU effect rendering? NOT IN SPEED but in quality, will it distort the video if I render with integrated graphics?

2. What's optimal ram? 8g?

3. What's optimal cpu clock speed before turbo? Do I need a quad core or higher?

Please only answer these questions if you know the answer, I need to know them importantly before building this pc, I don't want to spend money on parts that I don't need or are overkill for what I'm doing with it. Right now I use an AMD A10 7300 quad core @ 1.90GHZ, it renders 720p fine and ALMOST 1080P but the 1080 did have some distortion problems. This is also with 8G of ram and Radeon R6 graphics!

NOTE if you change my build my budget is LOW. I already have an OS I just need a monitor and the tower items and I'm looking not to pay too much over 500.

Weird i can render 1080P with no problems at all with my old Core 2 Duo E8400 with an old HD4850 :/
How does your raw 1080P looks like after recording? are those fine or are there any flaws in them?

If they are fine and with no flaws, then i would check the rendering settings for 1080P.

And last Q, what program are you using?

Camtasia. Here is a sample of the distortion, just watch the first few seconds to avoid uncharted spoilers.

Here is a successful clip I recorded and took but its only like a minute, mute for no spoilers and don't look at subtitles.

In that 1st clip you can hear the audio distort here and there and the video really does weird stuff. I just assumed it was my PC's fault.

I'm thinking, if a dedicated gpu is NOT needed for editing, that I will just drop mine from the build and put more money into a better intel processor.

I can clearly see what you mean, the raw footage are perfect but the rendered one are just awful.

I would be surpriced if it is your PC's fault, it really looks like my first video's where i didn't found the correct setting.

so i would check the settings and try again.

Better components normally equals faster rendering time.

But what rendering software are you using ?

I don't care about the render time, its the quality, if a good GPU only effects render time I don't need one right now. Since my budget is slim I was going to go with an intel integrated graphics setup and grab a video card down the road.

Edit : Oh and no the raw footage is worse. I don't have it on me I deleted it but its un watchable.

Depending on the hardware some CPU's are faster at rendering than a GPU and vice versa.

Thats what I'm thinking, I mean if I can ALMOST render 1080 on this laptop I wouldn't need that much stronger of a device would I? I mean obviously more GHz, and if I get a decent intel cpu it will have better integrated graphics then my current, so overall even without a dedicated gpu I will still see better progress yea?

Here's what I'll do to see if its my pc, I'll render the raw footage again with a different program over night and reply back tomorrow if it does the same thing with the distortion.

I just watched your raw footages again, and it looks like a buffer failure, so a another rendering program won't help..

Sorry i didn't noticed it before, but now i might have an idea of what might be the fail.

when you record, check CPU, GPU, Harddrive activity, and of cause the software from elgato.

1. is your cpu, gpu or harddrive at 100% all the time you record then it might be the problem.

2. what are the settings in elgato, if the bitrate is too high for the pc then the recordings will act like it does in your video.

Right now i really suspect the bitrate is too high or the overall settings!

1) I render with my gpu (which is only about 10 secs faster than my cpu) and I don't notice any quality difference. I'm pretty sure integrated graphics won't affect quality but will be VERY slow.

2) Depending on the software, 8 gbs may or may not be enough. When I'm using After Effects I usually hit 10 gbs.

EDIT: Also depends on what you are doing. If you are just adding transitions, text and or color correction, 8 gbs MAY be fine. If you are planning on doing things more complex than that I would recommend you get at least 16 gbs.

3) Dunno about clock speed, but yes you should at least have a quad core.

Just an amateur editor sharing his experiences :)

Thanks! So far 8g of ram has sufficed, the only downside is my integrated graphics keeps stealing it!

What software are you using?

1. Doesn't affect it at all, if your using cuda or open cl(in most programs.) quality is only worse when using nvec or quicksync

2. I would say 16, but 8 will do. 16 won't make render times faster, but will help with large edits.

3. Cpu speed doesn't mater, its how much compute power it has. Id get a fx 8300 if you can as its not much more money.

Sounds like a good idea, i had similar problems with a recorder program, and the cause of the fail was a too high bitrate.

While rendering it depends how many cores you have, so 95% is acturally not bad for the A10 7300.

I got a rig with that exact cpu and yeah it is an okay cpu for editing/rendering. but again the only effect you will see is the rendering time being smaller, no effect on the quality..

Sure thing, just checked a guide on the Elgato HD60 and found out that it is proberly your setting in elgato that are screwing you footage, but you laptop might not be able to acturally record in 1080P :/

  • A PC or Mac computer. Preferably NOT a laptop!! While most of the processing is done on the capture card itself, most consumer-level laptops are not powerful enough to handle capturing gameplay (especially at 1080p) and the hard drives in them will not be able to keep up with your video. This will result in glitchy, slow-motion, laggy, or just unusable recordings. It could easily kill your laptop hard drive over just a small amount of time, as well.

So you might need to get an upgrade to solve the problem, but with luck you can put one together for a cheap price :)

This one might be better, not sure, cheaper cpu but also less clock speed and less cores, BUT it has integrated graphics, the fx 6300 did not. So its either integrated graphics but less cpu power or more cpu power and I throw on like a cheap 20$ gpu. http://pcpartpicker.com/user/OnionRings/saved/mY2p99

The FX-6300 would be better for multi tasking but if you only will use it for recording and editing from your elgato, then the A8-7600 should be enough (not sure, but when you look at the encoding benchmarks it is better than the FX)

I'll gladly take the fx 6300, but what would you suggest for graphics then? Perhaps a cheap 20-30$ card? Anything that rivals integrated would work for me, I just noticed that the fx 63 doesn't come with on board.
