I'm just concerned about suffering when editing because of the 6500

honestly the only diffrence between an i5 6500 and a 6600k is a very small amount of speed.  the 6500 boosts to 3.6 and the 6600k can only overclock to about 3.8 or so being stable. so to be honest, as a video editor myself, the only way you'll suffer is about 5 minutes of rendering time. if you want to you should definitely get a 6700k later on for that, then your render times will increase a significant amount becasue of hyperthreading. but I genuinely think you'll be better off with a 1070. take it from someone who games and edits all the time.

Hey there

My parents said they would either pay for a GTX 1070 or an 6700K for getting A's on my finals.

I currently have a 960 4GB FTW+ and a i5 6500.

What would you recommend upgrading?

I can only have one of them though.

Definitely your graphics card, your i5 will be fine for a while.

I would get the 1070. a 960 can be limited sometimes. your CPU is pretty great honestly. and if you're just gaming thats all you'll ever need paired with a good card :)

I'm going to be doing a fair bit of editing next year for my Video Production class.

I have a friend who has a 6600K (OC) and a 980ti, and his 6600K is maxing out in Dying Light on high while the 980ti is only at 74% load

I have an i5 4440 with a 980ti, it is fine on 1080p. I am pretty sure dying light might be cpu heavy anyway

Then get the i7 if you're concerned.
