Hello, I have a data volume that is running low on space (8% 135GB free), so I want to replace the 2 x 2TB R1 volume with a 4TB volume.  At the moment any important data is held either in the could on optical disk as a backup method.  Most of the space is split between backups 30%, video 30% and music 30% so annoying to lose but in no way critical.

There has been a bit of noise lately about what RAID is protecting against, and more interestingly what it isn't.  The problems with the Whonnock server is a case in point.  RAID doesn't protect against the data corruption that can take place while a drive is failing in the consumer space.

So what are your thoughts, a 2  x 4TB R1 reusing the 2 x 2TB as backup drives or 1 x 4TB as the data drive and the other as a backup drive?

Thanks

Hey there :)

A backup solution would always be the better option compared to the redundancy that RAID offers when it comes to data safety.
Have in mind that if you have your separate backup drive in the same case as your main data drive this can't really be counted as a secure and safe backup as it wouldn't really protect you from things such as power failures, electrical fluctuations, physical damage, etc.

I would recommend to have a remote storage drive that will be holding your backups and a main drive pool (of one or more drives, depending on what you need) for your main data storage. The remote data storage can be a simple external drive where you can create regular or continuous backups, a NAS that you can use for remote storage access or some other sort of data storage device that isn't internally connected to your system. :)
