Just built a new computer a couple weeks ago and I have been changing hardware and overclocking and tinkering with the software, somewhere along the way windows went from 2-3 seconds on the "loading" animation to 30-45 seconds.  I need some ideas of what to look at.

ASrock X99 extreme4

I7 5820k at 4.4

crucial lpx 8x4 32g 2400 at 2666

Sapphire R9 Fury

Samsung 950pro nvme m.2 256g

crucial 256g ssd

Antec edge 750

Random things I can think of that may be causing a problem

Samsung 950pro nvme m.2 was imaged from Samsung non-nvme m.2

page file is on ssd, OS is on nvme

plenty of OC changes and instability with a couple BSOD (default uefi doesn't change load time)

ran ccleaner registry cleaner

on occasion bios doesn't recognize two of my sticks of ram but OS always does (removed those two sticks and no change)

bios was flashed to newest when first setting up

I don't know, things have changed since I used to do this a lot so I'm not certain what to look into.  Any thoughts would help, thank you

If you have an Intel chipset board, you could look into some boot speed increasing software they provide. Also, I'd say that the OC things you've done have screwed with the entire system. You mentioned a misdetection of RAM and the OS used to load fine until you OC. You might have to replace some parts if they are beyond repair...

well, everything runs smooth once loaded.  Stability tests are fine (which doesn't always mean something) and I pulled the two sticks out that were not always recognizing.  If something is wrong what part would it be?  Or could the OS simply be semi-corrupted?  In the old day's I would wail on the settings a little at a time and if I corrupted the OS I would just reinstall, just trying to avoid that now a days because I don't like reinstalls as much.  Another question would be, is the hardware that sensitive now?  Back when I started my Athlon XP-M was bullet proof, the only thing I had to worry about was corrupting data in the bios or the OS.

if original speeds were noted with fast startup on and slower speeds without that may be part or most of your slowdown, of course everything I've seen says to have fast startup off

  • 2 weeks later...

The end solution was to replace the motherboard.  After I took the time to figure out the actual symptoms of the system, I realized that any sort of hardware change or even bios change would result in a drastically lengthened boot time.  If I rebooted the system a couple times while changing nothing it would resume normal operation.  I know it was simply due to the motherboard because when I swapped motherboards, the system didn't need a fresh install and performed like normal on the same install.  In hind sight I wish I had reflashed the bios to know if it was somehow corrupted, but I am happy with my upgraded mobo.
