SSD Depletion

I was planning on getting an ssd as a boot drive and a hard drive as a mass storage drive. When I looked at prices for the 500GB 850 evo and a hard drive it was about the same as getting a 1TB 850 evo. I mentioned this to my friend and he said that he heard of SSD space depleting overtime after deleting files and other things. I then thought that if this is true then why would I spend $350 on a 1TB ssd when it may be only 750GB in 3 years. So I was wondering have any of you heard of SSD depletion? I have looked a lot on google and I cant find anything mentioning this.

Depends how you use the drive.

yeah in 3 years of constantly writing to it maybe, we are talking over 1000TB of writes here.

Yes, SSD flash storage degrades over time. It will not degrade to that much in 3 years; they usually work perfectly for at least 5 (that's the warranty period for the 850 EVO)

 

I'd get the SSD + Boot drive (well, I did), it gives you more storage overall, and you don't even need SSD speeds for a lot of things

Never heard of the actual capacity of an SSD dropping. I've been using the same Crucial M4 128 GB drive for nearly five years and it has never had any issues with durability, performance (to a degree to which I can tell anyway), or "capacity depletion."

 

I'm glad it's lasted this long. Those were the $1.70/GB days.
