My Current build:

fx-6300 (no oc)

r9a57 r2.0 mobo

8gb ddr3

120gb ssd

2tb hdd

2gb gtx 960 strix

I was looking to upgrade but Im in a predicament, I have an fx-8150 on hand, and I am going to have around $300-500 soon and I want to upgrade my machine

, but I dont know if i should upgrade my processor to an intel i5/i7, or if I should upgrade my video card to a gtx 1080,1070 when they release.

I will have around $450, + How much I sell my parts now for, so around $550 for a processor, mobo, and ddr4 combo, or $570 for a new video card

What do you guys think I should do? Thanks for any help

I think a 6300 will definitely bottleneck a 1080 or 1070.  I would upgrade the CPU, because if you don't do that, there probably isn't much point in upgrading the GPU (although, if you have the money for both... 9_9)

Wait for 1080 and stick with what CPU you have. As games become for GPU dependent and less CPU dependent the GPU gets more important. Which is why you see i3's paired with 970's.

You could always go for a cheaper 4th gen Intel setup.

I guess we never asked what resolution, framerate, and graphics settings you are targeting...

I play on 1080p right now at around 45ish fps on ultra AAA games, I'm hoping to be oculus ready, and be able to 4k game by next Christmas at around 30fps if I get a 4k monitor, but I use my PC mostly for gaming and Photoshop and premiere

What kind of 4th gen setup would be cheaper but future proof enough to pair with a 1080?

I would get an i7 if you are doing to do 4k editing stuff. Like a 4790k with a z97 motherboard you like and an upgrade to 16gb of ram. Maybe be a bit more expensive but just my opinion.

The top end mainstream i7 (4790k) with a good overclock would be the best option in that space probably.

Well pushing 4K at 30 fps should be doable at ultra with a 1080, since I think a 980M does 4K at very high pretty well in the 20 - 30 fps range.  Even though that's a huge GPU load, I would worry about that CPU still... hm....

How do you think a 1080 would work with my fx8150 or if I upgrade to an fx9590?

except for from the depths. That is the most cpu dependent game i have seen. My cpu usage instantly goes to 100% but my gpu is absolutely fine

that 8150 paired with a better graphics card will most likely be the best improvement you can get for the money

I've never seen that.

OP Should probably upgrade both, but I would think the CPU should be first on the upgrade list.

I'm not sure what motherboard you have but the 9590 requires super heavy duty boards to not burn them to death with its ungodly power draw.  Just having a board of the right socket is not enough.  Plus you'll need to spend at least another $100 on a liquid cooler to keep it under control, so I wouldn't seriously consider it if I were you.

I have a crossfire v, and so I should just spend a lot of money and switch to Intel?

Well don't make any rash decisions, but I can say that there is nothing from AMD that can compete with high end i7s right now.  Not even close.
