Hey there,

I've found HD7970 DCU II TOP and ROG Matrix Platinum Ghz edition on huge rebates. The question is: Should I buy it?

The DCU II TOP is for €266

ROG Matrix Platinum Ghz is for €302

Which one should I get? Here are my plans:

1. OC the heck out of it.

2.XFire later on: Not sure how would 2 3-slot cards play out. My current board is in my sig, I might be getting a Maximus VI Hero if I can't RMA the thing.

I know most of you will say "Wait for R9-290!", but you have to understand that it is allready on huge sale and probably won't get any cheaper.

AMD seem really desperate to get rid of all these 7000 series cards before the launch of the Rx 2xx series so I think that could indicate that the next generation of cards will have a better price to performance ratio, otherwise AMD wouldn't be trying to hard to get rid of all this stock, that's my theory anyway. Also the 7970 seem to be about that price everywhere, well atleast so in the UK. Although I could be wrong, I'm by no means an expert : P.

Here the DCU II variant normally costs €370 and Matrix €400. And the sales are only in one shop, others have the normal price listed above.

I dunno, all I'm saying is next gen cards might have a bit better price to performance ratio, but maybe not, go for it if you want.

Wait for the rebadge of 79xx to the mid-end of new Radeons which most likely will be even cheaper?

Just get the cheapest 7970 with a decent cooler and oc it yourself. The performance differences between different versions are not worth the extra money.

These ARE the cheapest models I can get, now the thing is - Does the slightly better cooler, swaggy LEDs and nicer ROG packaging justfy the slightly higher price of the Matrix?

I wouldn't call that 'slightly higher'.

I'd say no.

What do you think about cooling 2 of them? I've already seen pics of Matrixes and that they leave around a centimeter between, so no problem there, but I am not sure about the DCU II.

I think there's not much difference between any of the non-single fan coolers.

And one last question I didn't find straight answer for: When I install a second GPU, which will in terms of PCI-e brackets, be right next to the first GPU. Won't I suffocate the 1st GPU fans? I will ofc remove as much HDD cages as I can to get as much air as I can from my front 200mm fan if that matters.

The first gpu will get less air so it's best to get a fan on the side panel or something like that to deliver as much air to the cards as possible.

Well that won't be possible since I use the windowed version of the HAF XM, but I will probably have to see the temps myself, if air finds some way to the fans it'll be OK.

You can always ghetto mount a fan to the hdd cage.

Isn't it better to remove the cages completely? I can still use XDock for my HDD.

Normally yes. I'm not sure if it's different if you can place a fan on it that would be closer to the gpus though.
