Hey Everybody,

I am selecting the hardware for my first ever complete build. I have two  3tb wd black drives & I still like my G510 keyboard so that is staying. I'm picking everything else from scratch. This is overwhelming so I need some help from people's experience.

I would like to  stay under 1200 but I think 1500 max is still doable. I want it to perform great for anything I might need. I want great performance in high end applications like Adobe. I'm not big into gaming but I want it handle the most demanding games fairly well if I feel like it. I want it to keep up for a long time into the future.

Here's a list of what I'm thinking for my new rig:

I haven't picked a case cause there's SO many. I'm only doing 1 video card so I think I wanna stay in the mid tower range unless someone has had a great experience with a full tower and thinks I could use the room for my components. The wow factor is secondary, I want plenty of room for parts, air flow, cable management & lots of usb 3.1 (front ports are perfered over back.) I'd love one with removable dust filters, but it's not an absolute must.

I need a mouse with a free flowing scroll wheel / snap scroll toggle option

Gigabyte LGA1151 Intel Z170 ATX DDR4 Motherboard GA-Z170X-Gaming 3

Intel Boxed Core I7-6700K 4.00 GHz 8M Processor Cache 4 LGA 1151 BX80662I76700K

EVGA GeForce GTX 970 4GB SSC Gaming ACX 2.0+ Cooling Graphics Card (04G-P4-3975-KR)
or Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 G1 Gaming GDDR5 Pcie Video Graphics Card, 4GB (which card is best?)

G.SKILL 16GB (2 x 8GB) TridentZ Series DDR4 PC4-25600 3200MHz for Intel Z170 Platform Desktop Memory Model F4-3200C16D-16GTZ

(All 5 stars on amazon, Gigabyte tech claimed I would be overclocking the CPU with 3200MHz) Is that true?

Samsung 850 EVO (still deciding 1 TB or 500)

EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2 80+ GOLD, 750W ECO Mode Fully Modular NVIDIA SLI and Crossfire Ready Power Supply 220-G2-0750-XR

Arctic Silver 5 AS5-3.5G Thermal Paste (are some kinds of thermal paste better than others?)

I need help with cooling. I think cooling is of the utmost importance, so I wouldn't mind going for more than I need. Is air or liquid better? I've heard about leaks and failures with liquid that are not worth the risk. Any info on cooling and air flow would be great!

I want an excellent backup batttery / surge protection. Any help there would be awesome.

What do you think of this build? Am I missing anything? Are there going to be any compatibility issues? Any thoughts good, bad or indefferent are appreciated.

Thanks I'm so excited!

Welcome to the Forum!

http://pcpartpicker.com is a great site, and I'd suggest you use it rather than meticulously typing out your lists.

Let me assemble there what you've listed so far.

Personally I went liquid cooling. Is it for everyone? No, a high end air cooler should work fine. All your other components should inter-operate well with each other. Aftermarket thermal compound may make 2~3°C difference which is negligible for most normal gaming enthusiasts (unless you're after maximum overclock). You can look around for an air cooler or take someone else's recommendation.

1) get the evga card

2) i dont think any case have front usb 3.1 yet, as well as motherboard have the front connector for it yet `-`

3) build looks good

4) i dont see storage, i recommend SSD+HDD, samsung 850 evo 250gb + WD blue 1TB is a good combo

for a case with huge expandability, how bout mastercase pro 5?

as for cooling, i suggest getting NH-D15 or Dark Rock (Pro) 3, you can remove the fans and run the cpu at stock speed, and have silence computing or overclock the cpu with the fans attached

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

With air and liquid cooling, it's up to you. I personally go for air cooling because there are fewer points of failure and a large heatsink doesn't just die. However, you can get better performance with liquid cooling for sure.

For that thermal paste, I'd stay with it. If the cooler you choose comes with thermal paste pre-applied, you should probably stick with that as long as your first application goes smoothly. However, spare thermal paste is always great to have.

the g502 has a great scroll wheel with hyperscrolling, highly recommended. theres no reason to go for a 6700k. the i5 6600k offers basically the same performance for gaming, or if you want better performance in adobe software, spend an extra $200 and go for a 5820k + x99 (6 cores)

If you're thinking of how it looks with other components i would recommend the ASUS MAXIMUS VIII HERO for the Trident Z ram, the MAXIMUS mobo and the Ram looks really good together. Well it does in my pc in my opinion. But the components on your pc is great too ^^
