The 970 is the range most VR programs say the quality stabilizes.

You can play in VR on pretty much any graphics card

its performance depends on the game, and what settings you run it at

I played with a DK2 on an R9 280 with no problems, and we have a few VR machines here at school for game development that use 970's, so you should be good =D
