before anyone says this is a tech forum, this is off topic and there most likely will be atleast 1 or 2 survival/bushcraft enthusiasts on here

so somewhere in june or july i will be going camping with the damn family but depending on where we go i might be able to go into the woods/forest and try my hand at bushcraft so i want to make sure i have everything i should need so far i've made a list is there anything else i should add to the list?

knife

axe

hand saw

fire starter

tent

1 or 2 tarps

fishing rod and bait

first aid kit

some food(incase i'm incompetent and cant find/catch any food)

cordage(such as nylon, paracord or something else)

metal water bottle and cup

knife and axe sharpener

small shovelpick

wire(mainly for snares)

cloth rag/bandana

mat/sleeping bag

blanket

metal spork(or i try my had at making a wooden spoon)

small pot

extra clothes

anything else i should also bring and the knife that i'm gonna use will be the morakniv basic 511 which has a blade angle of 19 degrees so what sharpener would you recommend that has an angle around 19 degrees(it does have to be exactly 19 degrees) for around $10 USD and does anyone know of a book or resource that lists a good chunk of plants in the midwest region

Insect repellent, fuck i hate the sound of a mosquito hovering and checking me out for my sweet sweet blood

Oh and some toilet paper, you really don't want to be using some unknown random leaves for that, there are particular types you can buy from camping stores that are meant to break down faster in camping/going in a hole type situations lol

  • Fire starters are a pain, get waterproof matches as well as a few other ways to light a fire.Fire lighters are also great if the kidling is all wet.
  • Food: take freeze dri/deyhdrated food. It's really great: add boiling water and allow to sit for 10 minutes. If you're freezing, put it under your armpit while it soaks up thus you'll warm up and then have something warm to eat: learnt this in -4c.
  • Put more thought into your first aid kit - is it suitable for the environment? I know both of mine are suited to general cuts and scratches, broken limbs, hypothermia, snake & animal bites and GSW's.
  • If you're hiking, do you get blisters? If so, make sure you've got something to sort that out.
  • Plenty of warm socks. Bamboo socks are ideal - really warm, don't smell.
  • 2 good quality torches - one handheld, one headmounted. Personally I use LedLenser P7 and H14 torches. Make sure you have spare batteries.
  • If you're planning on cooking, don't rely on using a campfire to heat water - you'll normally need a large pot and some kind of assembly of logs to not damage the bottom of the pot. Look into solid fuel stoves or butane/gas based stoves. Boil water and use dehydrated food. Solid fuel heats slower but is a lighter carry weight.
  • Sleeping mat: make sure you've got something good like a Thermarest. Same with the sleeping bag - light but warm. Last thing you want is hypothermia.
  • Don't worry about the cup for the water bottle unless you're going to be brewing liquids (soup, hotchocolate). If you've got to carry it, it's more weight.
  • Tarps - why bother? They'r heavy and bulky - you've got a tent to keep you try.
  • Don't take a fishing rod, take a spool of line and hooks - easier to carry.
  • Water purification of some kind if you know you wont have 100% clean drinking water.

Are you carrying all this or is it going to be in an ATV or something?

Have a folding knife, like a swiss army knife as a backup to your main blade. The shape of the scandi grind on the mora 511 makes it very easy to sharpen on a stone like the Fallkniven DC4.

Knife sharpeners with a v notch are just about ok for sharpening crappy kitchen knifes but shouldn't be used for much else. Use a proper sharpening stone and look up some youtube videos on knife sharpening.

Are you carrying all this or is it going to be in an ATV or something?

i plan to carry the majority of it, i have a headlamp, the reason why i have both tarps and a tent is the list is because i want to try to make a shelter with just wood, branches, debris, etc and if that fails i'll use the tarps and if that fails i'll retreat to the tent, i do plan to brew liquids so the cup will be useful as it will be easier to monitor said liquids, my fishing rod can retract so it can fit in my bag and i plan to bring an extra spool of fishing line, i do plan to get a lighter and some matches in case i cant make a fire with the firestarter, the main reason for the cloth rag/bandana is for basic filtering then i can use a three stage filter(which is made of grass, charcoal, and sand) and then i will boil the water to the purification, as for the first aid kit i am currently researching what i should put in it

In that case the fallkniven dc3 is a good pocket stone. It's actually the only stone I currently have.
