converting an external hard drive to an internal hard drive.

whatswrongwithyou

so my external HDD's cable broke (pictures provided) and the pins that connect the cable to it broke as well, so there's no way for me to reconnect it to extract the data on it. the hard drive itself is working fine. its just the connecting cable that got destroyed. i watched some videos on how to disassemble my hard drive (Seagate expansion portable drive, model: srd00f1 500gb) and was wondering if i can disassemble it and use it as an internal one... without a dock, just with sata and power cables just so i can extract the data and  then unplug it (or keep using it as an internal hdd if you guys recommend it) any help is much appreciated.. thanks

Hey bud, sorry to hear about your external hard drive.  Maybe we can help you get some other use out of it.

This appears to be directly related to your particular external hard drive.  Good luck and let us know if it helped.

From that video, you can see at the end that he removed the piece where your broken connector is. That piece is the bridge between the drive sata connector and the usb connector. So yes, it it possible to get the drive out of the enclosure and use it as an internal drive.

If it's a spinning HDD and not an SSD, it is most likely to be a SATA based HDD, so yes you could turn it into an internal. Seagate makes great internal HDDs (I have a ton of those), but horrible external drives. I've had at least 2 externals from them, 1 the USB port broke off the board and I had to completely take it apart and solder the pins back on and epoxy it. and the other was a portable USB 3.0 drive that took so much power it would choke out my laptop's 3.0 adapter card and over heat it after a few minutes forcing me to use 2.0... I upgraded to a drive twice the storage size from Western Digital and it runs on about half the power and it runs fine on the card.

CPU: Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition 3960X | Motherboard: Intel DX79SR "Stormville" | RAM: 32GB G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series DDR3 PC3-12800 (4x 8GB) Quad-Channel | GPU: 2x EVGA GTX 970 FTW 4GB in SLI (I have Many other builds plus 100+ Macs (don't judge me)... Many specs are listed on my profile)

There is a chance it will work, but the data might be encrypted to prevent this kind of thing (I.E. data thieves). I know that on my external drive (a WD My Passport Ultra 3TB) this is the case. I believe that if I were to try and put this in a system, the drive would either not show up, or it would basically shred the data.

BTW, if you're looking for a new drive, I HIGHLY recommend this one. It's freakin mint. I made a review for it, so if you want I could link you to it.
