Janus 2.0

"A creative man is motivated by the desire to achieve, not by the desire to beat others" - Ayn Rand

What can you achieve when you don't worry about who you're trying to beat or what can you create? Life moves at a constant pace. We don't realize what we have done until we sit and look back.

Big shout out to my cousin for all his help and ideas!

I get itches to progress on a regular basis. I have been doing Folding on my Computer's down time to hopefully find a cure for Cancer (the previous build was dedicated to it and my father who passed from it). The Division was released, we all love it or hate it. After it's launch I realized how much time I was spending in my office and what it was doing to my computer (the cougar Fans started failing fast). I figured it was time for a whole office upgrade. I wanted it to look better and be more comfortable and this build/office upgrade is the result. There is a new monitor being created by Samsung that is 32:9 and 49 inches. When that time comes my desk will shrink somewhat (I made it slightly modular). A dual monitor setup has always been the dream but the evil bezel in the middle has always prevented that from being a reality. Having a 32:9 monitor fills that gap and I'm quite excited for it.

Most of the things on this build were technically in the other build but with the time I've put into this one I think we can all agree it's a new build. Before you ask, yes I'll be upgrading to Pascal but I want the Pascal Titans to come out first and drop down to the 1k a piece range. I've been burnt so many times by fat price drops on parts I'm holding a little longer on the upgrade this time and when I do I don't see a purpose in doing a new build log as it will aesthetically look the same, just have 4 Pascal Titans vs 4 Maxwell Titans. This build features new Ram, different Monitors, custom case (see Pics), some soldering, some lighting, some acrylic bending and a few other new things. Also, I did hit top 20 world on FS Ultra on the previous build but I'd rather not do that again as I already fried one 5960x and I don't want to piss off Intel RMA further.

Okay, I have been in a family that Logs and Saws lumber since inception but I've never actually created anything out of it and honestly neither has most of my family (odd right?). So this was a whole new experience for me. I really did NOT realize how difficult it would be. Like almost everything else I do I just thought I would figure it out. Well I generally do but getting there is the fun/hard part. Life is the journey and don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise. First off, building a desk is quite different than sitting at a desk (my primary occupation) and I was up to 6 Ibuprofen a day. After finishing it I thought (Thank God the hard part's over!). Man was I wrong.

Who here knows about Wallpaper? It's " The G D* Devil!" Took me longer to strip the wallpaper and paint my office than it did to build the desk and the PC and that's saying something. I'm sure you'll all appreciate the results.

P.S. I'm a big Superman fan as you'll soon see.

P.P.S. Oh, and for the Record, it reks in The Division!

Product Reviews - We'll start with the Bad first

The Rampage V Extreme - Sounds cool right? Wrong, worst Bios ever (and I've been through some bad ones in my time) Fails to boot quite often (even if I don't have it overclocked) and it is uber glitchy. There are modded versions of this bios out there that people say are a must and since I painted the board and voided the warranty I thought WTH. So I did it, best decision ever. Made this board usable and actually boot in a few seconds vs 30-45 seconds before.

The Corsair 900D - I know my case isn't technically a 900D(s) anymore after I slapped 2 of them together and modded the balls out of it but I do wish to mention that, while it's a decent case. It has it's flaws. The drive bays are weird. The disk drives sit noticeably in and since you can't have fold downs with this case it looks out of place on my build. Also, I had to buy a 5.5-3.5 adapter set for the HDD's because apparently they can either be used with an adapter and be up top or be put on the modular set on the bottom. Not sure what they were thinking there. Last but not least, the Cable Management. This Case is designed for QUAD SLI and water but for some reason they decided that 3/4" on the back side was enough for 8 GPU and 2 CPU Cables and all the fans cables... Again, not sure what they were thinking making a monster that has no cable space.

On to the less bad and not great

Dat EKWB Setup- Yes it really cost this much but I do have some over purchasing on connectors in case anything breaks or gets discontinued. I'd rather build this to set up for a longer time period. The parts quality is second to none so the only complaint I have is the price... WOW the price. The connectors range from 5.99 to 7.99 and I have a LOT of them. 4 Radiators, 2 Pumps and 7 total water blocks will do that. I suppose. Also, their RMA is pretty Gawful so if you find another system you like please go with it.

The Good!

NZXT Hue+ and their extension sets are really great but probably best for smaller cases. They have software to control light and you can do it based on CPU and GPU temps. I've wanted something like this to come along for a really long time. I always thought it would be cool to be gaming and see my PC turn colors to remind me to take breaks!

Everything else - They do what they're supposed to do, ask questions as I always answer!

Everything was going great until i saw The Division on your monitor.

Shot through the heart and you're to blame, 30fps and i'll pirate your game - Bon Jovi

Take me down to the console city where the games are blurry and the frames are thirty - Guns N' Roses

Arguing with religious people is like explaining to your mother that online games can't be paused...

It's actually dropped dramatically in price now. So if you think you're sad, think about me who paid 3x it's current value!

Im surprised you can game with 4 way SLI though...arent there any stuttering issues?

That's actually heavily dependent on which game I play and which driver I use. I always research a work around if one exists.

Essentially yes, my father passed last year and my brothers and I took over his business. The first build you see (the rather shotty one in the corner of the office surround pic) was 1.0 and featured some of the same hardware but was not well built. Hence the 2.0

looks fancy af, good job ;)

i'd be worried about stuttering but sounds good if there are enough workarounds etc

to get it perfect you could just try some of those 34" >100hz IPS gsync displays, the immersion is great

I actually plan to try the 49" 32:9 that Samsung is coming out with late this year or early next. I would love an IPS and hope it's GSync!

Insane build bro :P but... if you're gonna pay $500 for a TN panel monitor, don't you at least want a 1ms response time? 5ms is typical IPS response time and you can find both of those at 144Hz for at least the same price, if not cheaper.

Meh, at the time this was the only GSync 1080. Surround 1080 is 6 megapixels. 3/4 of 4k. I did try Rog Swift 1440 Surround but most games were just CPU capped as their engines are old. I do plan to do 32:9 (2 monitors in one) when they release them late this year or early next year. Dual 1440p would probably be the sweet spot for immersion and quality.

dual 21:9 ROG swifts? lol they have basically no side bezel for exaclty that reason. or maybe 4 set up in a rectangle.
