My wifi router is a XFINITY router.

Do you have a model number?

If it's a dual band router it's already "split" so to speak.  You may need to go into the router's setup enable both bands, name the SSIDs as you prefer, and set security as you prefer.  The wireless devices that you are trying to use with your router will need to be dual band devices as well in order to pick up both bands.

2.4 GHz will generally be your strongest band throughout the house so if your throughput issue is related to signal, you won't gain much by using both bands.  If your signal is strong, but you have too much traffic on one band, using both will help a lot.
