Nikon D300 viewfinder square

There is a black square when looking through the viewfinder and it is slightly to the top right. If that is the focus point why is it not in the middle?

Is it completely black or is it just an outline?

If it is an outline then yes that's the focus point. If it's not in the center then check your settings. You should have an option to pick a single focus point and then move it to whichever place you want.
