Hi guys!

This is my first time building a desktop and I'm not too sure if I'm doing everything right,

I have compiled a list of components and would appreciate it if someone experienced could see that everything's compatible.

The list goes:

  • Aerocool Cruisestar Mid Tower Case with Window Black

you can make a great setup using pcpartpicker.com

On that site you can see if parts are compatible and you can use the [BB]Code to share the list with us.

SSD. Once you go with an SSD you will never go back. Keep the HDD for your games and your stuff but add in a cheap 120 or 240GB SSD for your OS and key applications. Trust me, it's worth the 60+ bucks.

Main System Specs:

  • Intel Core i5 6500 3.2GHz CPU
  • Gigabyte GA-H170-D3H Motherboard
  • Kingston HyperX Fury 16GB 2400MHz, Gskill Ripjaws 8GB
  • Asus GTX 1060 Turbo
  • Kingston HyperX Savage 240GB SSD
  • Seagate 1TB NAS Grade HDD x2
  • Thermaltake NiC F3 Cooler
  • EVGA Supernova 750 G2 Power Supply
  • NZXT S340 Red/Black Case
  • Noctua NF-F12 Fan x2

Laptop Specs:

  • Intel Pentium N3700 CPU
  • 4GB Kingston RAM
  • Intel HD Graphics
  • Windows 10 Home

Peripherals:

  • Microsoft Wired 600 KB
  • Dell 2003 Mouse

1. lga 1151 mobo with a lga 1150 cpu, not compatible.

2. coolermaster b2 psu, try to get something else.

3. if just gaming, you don't need an i7, get an i5 and use the money on a better gpu.

what's your budget? any size/color requirements? full setup or just the tower?

Yeah that's what I plan on doing in the long run, I'm trying to not spend too much at once because as I live in Australia pretty much anything that's remotely related to gaming is hugely overpriced.

Yeah I'm from Australia and it is true how gaming products or anything high end is at a higher price for obvious reasons but I would still try and push for an SSD. Even if it means waiting another week or two to get your PC.

I can vouch for this. I have 2 systems, the one in my sig (though I now have a samsung 950 pro 512) and then I have an i7 4770 with a z87m board an asus gtx 680 and 8 gigs of ram booting from a 2 TB HDD and it's aweful compared to my main rig.. I'm ordering a samsung 750 120 gb this week to just get back to booting from an SSD at work.

what's your budget? any size/color requirements?

To solve your first point would this be a good anternative CPU:

Intel Core i7 6700

https://www.pccasegear.com/products/33194/intel-core-i7-6700

With your second point, should I look for a different PSU for more watts? More reliable? Different Brand? Other?

With your third point, isn't the GPU (EVGA GeForce GTX 960 SuperSC ACX 2.0+ 4G) quite powerful as is, or should I look for something stronger? My budget is probably filled out as is, but if necessary I could try to squeeze out another $100-$200AU and I don't really mind the color as much but I'd prefer for it to be matching

if you're just gaming, no need for an i7 6700, it won't give you as much performance as a i5 6400/6500 and an r9 390. whats your budget, size/color requirements? maybe we can help you with the build.

Interesting, sorry if this sounds dumb but why would an i5 6500 be stronger for gaming than an i7 6700?

The 960 is ok. I'd rather buy an SSD. you wouldn't be sorry. if an SSD is out of the question then rather at least go for a hybrid drive (though it's not quite an SSD)

edit: my second system feels a load more clunky simply because my hard drive is overworking itself.

it's not better, it's just the same. games still only utilize 4 cores and 4 threads at the moment so the added threads on the i7 are wasted for now. however how they'll help in the future is still a little unclear.

gaming favours the graphics card over the processor.  cpu performance has pretty much stoned over the years, and games usually don't use more than 4 cores 4 threads. you can see from the video that there is pretty much no more performance increase after lynnfield, which is the 1st gen i5.

Right now it's at around $1,350AU, but I can push it to $1,500 if necessary

Although, since I live in Australia the prices are really messed up here

E.g. Uncharted 4 libertalia edition is $120US when converted that equals $155AU but instead, here it's priced at $200AU

Just a question I've had on my mind for a while:

With Direct x 12 coming up alongside AMD's competitor to it, does choosing an Intel processor mean that I can only go with Direct x 12? And what components need to have direct x 12 support (so far I believe it's GPU, CPU and motherboard)?
