Anyone have any experience using this?

I'm going to be picking up a i7 4xxx Intel NUC or Gigabyte Brix here soon and don't want to use Windows on it. Found this mediacenter based on linux and looks pretty cool.

I'm going to throw 16GB ram and a Mushkin 240GB mSata SSD into it for a sexy little HTPC

You need more RAM then 16gb!

Why not make a tiny MITX system? Why a NUC :/

The mobo only supports 16gb. Plus the OS will not even use 1gb and when under a load it won't even budge to 4gb. 99% of people will never use more than 6gb of ram for ANYTHING they do. Going with a large amount of ram is near pointless unless you have something that can use all of it. I just happen to have 12 sticks of 8gb mobile ram sitting here.

Because a NUC is just a tinch bigger than my phone and it can fit in my hand and in a bag easily.

if you arent going to help then dont comment in the first place!

ttam have you considered a raspberry pi HTPC instead? im not sure how it performs vs a NUC but it might be cheaper

The pi just seems to fragile. The size of it is a bonus but getting a Nuc/Brix that has slots for ram, a ssd and comes with a solid case with usb, hdmi, etc just wins.

ya i get what your saying :)

i would go the Pi route if i was on a budget but like you said the expandability makes the NUC so much more attractive

I just love the option of picking it up and moving it anywhere. The cool thing about the linux based OS OpenElec & XBMC is I can put a app on my tablet/phone and control the HTPC from it.

Picking up a Nexus 7 tablet off the table, pushing a button and pulling up a movie for a chick to watch with me. That's some suave James Bond shit right now haha

I am using it. Seriously you do not need 16GB of ram neither an i7. Mine is just Celeron G1610 and 1GB of ram. No issued on HD playback.

Have you experiend using xbmc on windows? It is pretty much the same xbmc but on openelec, it is a very stripped down linux with xbmc installed, it will appear like openelec is the OS. Others used ubuntu/debian/fedora or any linux distro then install xbmc on it.

You can try openelec first on your existing pc/laptop by installing it on a usb thumb drive then boot from it. I am using SanDisk USB3.0 thumbdrive, no hdd or ssd at all, my vid comes from my NAS.

I like the NUC but I went on the cheap path compromising looks and size.

Pardon my English. Not my native language.

Haha I know I don't need 16gb but if I have it sitting here and it's not being used.. might as well right?

Nope, didn't even know there was a version for Windows. Downloading it now to check it out. Just from the 2 minutes I've played in it, this is pretty damn cool. For sure going to use it.

I like the NUC because I can take it with me when I travel and just hook up my external drive with movies, shows on it.

As far as I know, NUC uses SODIMM, rams used for laptops. It's a good thing having already those. Learn how to use xmbc first before going all-out on openelec. Their wiki is good and enough place to start.
