I am currently using a 250gb 850 EVO + 1TB WD Blue and another WD Blue 500gb drive for backups (Both drives having 22,000+ power on hours)

Now that I am running out of space, I need a new storage solution. I am planning on getting a new 2 TB drive to use as a main drive in addition to the 250gb SSD for system and programs. I have considered WD Black 2TB, but it is quite expensive. Does the reliability of the WD Black justify its cost? I could get 3TB worth of storage if I chose 3 1TB Blues over 1 2TB Black.

Another thing I want to try is RAID. My motherboard GA-H97N-WIFI supports RAID 0,1,5,10. I have heard that the motherboard just uses CPU power to RAID, and RAID 5 hurts the most due to parity calculations. It is also impossible to rebuild a RAID 5 array using the motherboard as it simply takes ages to do so. RAID 5 is basically useless in such a situation. However RAID 0,1,10 are still viable options. What I am thinking is using the old blue drives in RAID 0 while having backup software copying things from the RAID 0 array to the 2 TB backup drive, eliminating the risk of failure and the need to rebuild the array. In this case, I will need to buy a 2TB drive, or possibly another 1TB Blue in case the RAID controller cannot deal with drives of different sizes.

For the price of the WD Black, I could get a 500gb SSD for about the same price. I can still do the RAID array, but I will have a super fast but small drive for backups. Or maybe I can run solely on SSD and have everthing stored using a NAS? What would be the best option for me?

i would just get wd blue

i recommend against any raid except RAID 1, but thats only if you have valuable data you want to keep

for the average user, its just best to do a weekly or monthly backup instead

out of ssd space? maybe move some stuffs to the HDD, if nothing can be moved then buy a new SSD

out of hdd space? buy a new hdd, ez pz

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

For me Raid is too complicated. I just have a 1,2, and 4 Tb all together in a redundant windows disk pool (It know, technically I need 1 more Tb to make full use of my 4Tb disk. So my data are safe, it's easy to manage and easy to use.
Of course, some people would disagree.

I do not need 3 Tb of storage. I only need around 1.5-2TB of storage. Also 3TB blues are just the newer greens that run at 5400rpm. 1TB Blues currently have the best performance to price.

i dont understand why people gets bothered by hdd performance so much when they're running off ssd

hdd are fine as long as they are reliable and can store lots of data lol

the performance difference is minimal anyway

but that may just be my opinion

You can never get too much ssd space, considering the fact that SSD prices are still high. Now that I am having a few HDDs lying around, maybe I can RAID them to get some performance out of it.
