I didn't say it was, I just have a sinking feeling that the new gen cards(let's say top of the line initial releases 1080/490) aren't going to be drastically better than what's available now.  Sure better performance/price is always welcome, but I really want to see the raw performance jump that should come with the architecture change.

Umm, that is exactly what is happening.

Better price to performance usually comes from architectural change, and that is what we're getting. Not to mention if the rumors are true, we're getting R9 Fury performance at 100W. Imagine the overclocking headroom. You could easily be looking at R9 Fury X performance at R9 390 price when overclocked.

Is that what we can expect from the 490/1080 though or is that for a more mid range card like a 480/1070?  That's the part that worries me, if the new top of the line initial releases are just like higher overclocked Fury's/980ti's.

If Pascal/Polaris's best initial offering doesn't run Crysis 3 at 4K with the highest graphics settings 60+FPS, then Nvidia and AMD can both GTFO.

What, do you think manufacturers can just make 600mm^2 gpus from the very beginning of a new node for $650 and turn a profit? There is a reason Titans release a lot more expensive than the similar Ti cards that come out six months later. Nvidia's not doing it just to be dicks. Right now the 600mm^2 Pascal chips are so expensive to make they're only selling them in packs of 8 for $130,000.

I can't really comment on what Nvidia's offering will bring at different price points, since all we have to by is rumors, but Polaris is not top of the line for AMD. Vega 10, which is their HBM2 cards is expected between Q4 2016 and Q1 2017. Even after those cards, we're going to have Navi, but not sure if those will just be bigger cards, or also include architectural improvements over Vega. Nvidia's top of the line is also not going to be released immediately and I expect their will also have the same time frame as Vega 10.

I understand what you are saying, but I didn't mean what you quoted to be taken literally.  It was more tailored to what I want not what I truly expect.
