I am going to make a server, I want to run it as a NAS, but I also want to run servers on it like Minecraft (I would run 1 game server at a time). What sort of hardware would I need and is it possible? I think it would be possible to assign cores to different parts, some to the NAS and some to the game server. I have been looking at the Xeon E5-2603 which would be able to spread the work and use more RAM bandwidth for both, but it is more expensive because of the mobo. Any suggestion?

But I'm doing both, I don't think it would have enough power.

You do not need much power at all for either task, and if you need ecc memory for the nas then certain i3s support it,

But, the only problem you would run into is the network speeds because you would not be able to transfer files to the nas and host the server at the same time because the will be huge fps drops on the clients, and if you plan on hosting large amounts of people then you should consider renting due to average home networks not having enough speed.

Also if you are going for a e5 26xx then a 2670 is a good choice for about $70 on ebay, especially if you already have a 2011 motherboard, if not then a g3220 or g440 have ecc support, and get something else for the minecraft server.

Network bottlenecks can be overcome with some card/cordage.

I would check out Linus' videos on his "2 gamers 1 cpu" builds, I think they're very similar to what you want.

It needs some investment storage-wise and some software work, but can split two operating systems between assigned cores.
