Wasnt sure what category to put this in, figured the builders hang out here probably do plenty of upgrades too.

I am soon upgrading from a FX-4300 on a M5a97 MB to a i7-4790k on a ASUS Z97-A or Pro Gamer MB (still deciding).

I am running Win10 and would like to be able to do the upgrade without needing to reinstall everything. Are there any threads on this forum (couldnt find a search function) that can teach me the steps to take to accomplish this with the least amount of headache? Or anyone that can point me in the right direction?

also win 10 is connected to the mobo  so you will need a new product key (unless  you have the retail copy, but no one buys that)

three rules to avoid having a screwed up OS:

1) dont clone windows

2) dont upgrade windows

3) clean install when  moving windows to a different motherboard

I have win10 on a SSD and most my game/programs on a HD. Will that make it any easier?

most of your programs will need to be reinstalled, but yes its easier

unplug your HDD (make sure you have nothing important on your SSD cause that will get wiped)

install windows from a USB drive (here are steps how, including how to make the USB drive http://www.howtogeek.com/224342/how-to-clean-install-windows-10/)

then plug in your HDD, delete any programs that are on it and reinstall those

all your files and games will still be there

Looks simple enough, but the program wont recognize my thumb drive, so I am doing the ISO and will burn it to a CD-r

i think you need to make the USB a bootable format before you put the ISO on it

but disks work too

doesnt work if you cant boot into windows in the first place

also wont fix any programs that arent working correctly, wont get rid of old unnecessary updates, wont get rid of any viruses or malware you didnt know was on the PC, wont clean out the GBs of temp files, etc...

and repairing corrupt parts of the OS manually is time consuming and very difficult for someone who is not experienced with OS maintenance, which is the case for most of the people cloning "to save time and effort"

doing a clean install takes far less effort than going through all the registry errors and event logs trying to fix things one by one

i think there are ways to transfer just windows settings to a new PC

or make a program that you can code to redo all your settings at the click of a button
