Have my first gaming rag built. Have a haswell i7 4770k processor and want to overclock to about 4.2 with a water cooling kit or a air cooling kit? Dont know need help dnt have the money for custom water loops yet but need a cpu cooling asap. Whats the best to cool my haswell for 4.2. Maybe something like Corsair Hydro H100i? thanks

Any high end air or water cooler will keep a 4770k cool. But a majority of the heat depends on how well your chip can overclock. Either a Noctua NH-D14 or Corsair H100i for high end cooling or even a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo is really good cooler.

H100i is if you're shooting for 4.5-4.6 ghz minimum. A Hyper 212 Evo would be plenty for you. It's cheap and a great value cooler.

Guys, It all comes down to the silicon lottery.  Don't target a clock speed.  Figure out what your chip can do without pushing voltage too high.  Follow the guidelines in this video.  It was made for Ivy Bridge but the concepts carry over to pretty much any platform that has chips with unlocked multipliers.

Corsair H100i or the H110 (however it does not fit in all cases). These are your best options. Stress test with Aida64. Your temps should not exceed 80C.

No I was just wondering what temperature should I never let it go past

Yeah, like Analog said, "Your temps should not exceed 80C."

That's damn Hot. That's 176 Degrees Fahrenheit!

Although, I believe Intel's limit is 90C(194 Fahrenheit), before it shuts itself down.

for benchmarking or stress testing i use an 85° cut-off. if you are looking for a bonsai

run the 90° for validation and then down-clock for 24/7 ops.

for 24/7 ops temperature with real-world apps i try to keep it under 70°.
