I know the general knowledge is to keep magnets away from computers as it will corrupt the data. But here's the thing, my wifi antennas use magnets to stick to the case and I use a magnetic screwdriver to make changes. So how much of a magnetic field is neccisary to crash a computer? Is this interference less of a factor today than it was several years ago?

A Hard drive has magnets MANY 100's of times stronger than any magnets you would use to attach an antenna to the side of a case.

Hi Jaybird,

HDD are a common application for rare-earth magnets and one we come across a lot so you will be fine using magnets to attach the antenna to your case. Some people also use magnets to attach fans to the inside of cases. Magnets can interfere with and corrupt hard drives but you would need a substantial magnet to do this. Something along the lines of an N52 grade neodymium magnet.

There is loads of info on our tech centre about neodymium magnets if you wish to look into it further.

Thanks

first4magnets.
