Well, Intel does have some of their chips made in Vietman, so it's very possible that it's legit. Just because the laser etching on the IHS is a little bolder doesn't mean it's a fake. I have and old Celeron and P4 that both have slightly bolder etching than other CPUs. I would take along a known working system and test it before buying. However, if someone really knows what they are doing it could be faked for pictures, but an in person inspection will tell you all you need to know really quick.

As far as I can tell, there is no plant that uses an X in it's batch code.  Can anyone correct me on that?

Quite outdated, you don't find Q batches from Malay anymore (since 45nm went out of production for cpus) but you get Js on the haswell-e and ivy-e

That's because you're looking at ES batches dated 2012 and 2013. Vietnams can only be found 2014 onwards.

X = US (unless they have changed it recently)

I would also ask to see the retail packaging and compare the numbers on the IHS to the numbers on the box sticker. (This is Intel's own advice straight from their website.)

Got me there.  Can't seem to find 'x' batch codes unless you look for them specifically.

Well the stock photos will all be old batches from 2013 when they came out. Vietnam is only recently producing 22nm tri-gate.

Well it's quite likely a new one given that it was produced quite late last year :)

Doubt it's truly new though. Just well cleaned.

That's pretty fair. Craigslist's disclaimers are in order however.

I guess the only way is to have it tested at the time of buying. Most people will be OK with you taking something to test it with if they're legit.
