First build and just wanted to check- does something HAVE to be plugged into the 4 + 4 CPU plug on my psu? What is it meant for? Nothing is plugged in to it now. I have my SATA cable plugged in the SATA one but the cable running from the PSU meant for the cpu plugged into the mobo. Just wanted to make sure I'm not missing a major plug

Thats the power for the CPU itself. why do you have a sata cable plugged from the PSU to mobo? sata is for harddrives.

That's for the 8 pin CPU connector at the top of a motherboard, is your PSU semi-modular? If so you may have both the header on the PSU, and a cable in the bundle already.

Semi modular mobo? I have a modular PSU- the 8 pin cpu connector on the mobo has the psu plugged into it

Sorry I'm really tired and writing a paper, I mean semi-modular PSU :P although for april fools day MSI released plans for a modular mobo!

If you have the 8 pin CPU connector going to the PSU as one of the non-modular cables, then ignore the header on the PSU.

In that case, you won't need the extra 4+4.

You would need it if your motherboard had the extra headers for it, but it doesn't, does it? There's really only one consumer processor that needs such a huge amount of power, the FX-9590. So unless you have that particular CPU and one of the few motherboards that support it, leave the 4+4 cables off.

Yeah I've got an 15- 4590 and my mobo doesn't have any additional headers for it. It booted up just fine :D
