So my friend is building a new pc and is having some problems with the motherboard and/or cpu. when he presses the power button nothing happens, i told him to short the power sw pins and nothing again. there is an led on the front panel that is lit. from this we've concluded that either the mobo or the cpu is dead.

Any thoughts or other ideas on what it might be?

Could we have the parts?

Also, when you turn it on does anything happen? Fans start up? Lights turn on? Anything?

Here is what you might want to do:

  1. Check that all the power cables to mobo and CPU are properly plugged in. You might want to just unplug and replug all of them to make sure. This was a problem with my first PC.
  2. Make sure the RAM is in properly. You might want to take it out then put it back in just to be safe.
  3. Unplug everything not needed (unplug storage, GPU unless you are using an Intel EE CPU, USB Flash drives, mice, keyboards, etc.). Only leave the PSU, CPU, RAM, Mobo, CPU Cooler, and case as well as the display.
  4. If all that doesn't work try plugging in speakers of headphones to the audio jack. Sometimes if the motherboard is having problems it might blurt out beep codes which could be of help.

PSU is dead probably, try shorting it

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

then its probably the motherboard. if no fans are spinning then there is no power coming to them, and there are no boot beeps or anything right?

Yeah no beeps

Try getting him to unplug EVERY cable and replug it. Generally that is more likely than a dead part.
