So I have done my research on picking a router and am pretty confident in my understanding of terminology. My only problem now is actually getting data on a router. I've tried amazon, and there is always some piece of critical info missing from the description. Is there a magical database you router people all use to find info? Can I just shout specs I want into here and get you all to pick me a router?

Just a guy who peaked at building back in the days of the GTX 980. If you see me here, assume i have technical knowledge akin to a committed hobbyist builder back then. If something's changed, you'll need to tell me(nicely plz). I'm probably asking for help with the modern build scene since I have no clue what's going on.

You can start on amazon and google the routers that draw you attention and usually find the data sheet or the manufactures listings.

idk how you did this, but that looks about right. And this is a modem/router/switch combo?

It isn't, I have one. It's a great router, but not a combo unit.

At $200 budget for both, I would recommend picking up a Surfboard 6141 as your modem (assuming cable): http://www.amazon.com/ARRIS-SURFboard-SB6141-DOCSIS-Cable/dp/B00AJHDZSI

Then for router an Asus RT-AC66U: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833320115

That's probably going to be about your most reliable and feature rich combination at that price point.

Okay, this looks good as well, can somebody else vouch for this over the first option?

If you are talking about the cable modem, it works. I had it and I have had no issues. Only current issue with this modem is s security related one. But, Arris is in the process of getting a patch ready and getting it out to your cable provider. Now the router I dint know. I have never owned an ASUS router, if its any thing like their motherboards then you shouldn't have an issue. You want to make sure you purchase a Dual band N router or better yet a Wireless AC router. My sister has the TPlink Archer C7, it runs about $100 on the good old interwebs. Its not necessarily the best router, but it was a major improvement to their single band wireless N router.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

I can vouch for both that ASUS router and that cable modem, as I used to work at an electronics store, and have a similar modem to that one.

Unfortunately I have a modem/router combo provided by our ISP, because the ISPs where I live require you to use their modem/router combos.

We get two public IPv4 addresses so I've enabled passthrough for our router's MAC address and turned off the modems' WiFi.

never recommend getting a modem/router combo, as I have yet to find one that doesn't have buggy firmware, or security holes. Plus, buying both units in one renders the router useless if the modem stops working, and vice versa. And if you switch providers from say, a Cable solution to DSL or Fibre, you'll need a new modem anyways.

ASUS' RT-AC56U, AC66U, and AC68U routers are all great choices, depending on the number of devices connecting to the router, both wired and wireless.

The TP-Link Archer C7 is a great budget choice that actually has amazing performance and reviews, as noted by @Donut417 and is worth its' $100 price.

I personally run a Netgear Nighthawk R7000, similar to the ASUS AC66U, with around 4-5 wired device and 9-10 wireless devices. Works well enough, and is also fully capable of running custom DD-WRT firmware allowing me to tweak any setting I desire, and even run Transmission BitTorrent on it.
