Very strange computer problem. [Need help]

I am testing some computers from 1995 (Yes, I know they are worthless but i do it for fun) and i have one that is acting very strange.

 

I turned it on and it done nothing. I took out the CMOS battery. Nothing, I switched the ram to another socket and it turned on but the screen was a little corrupted.

 

I replaced the ram and it was fine.

 

I turned it off to plug a keyboard in and turned it on and it was dead again.

 

I plugged in a speaker and turned it on. It beeped once and came on but had the corrupted screen again.

 

I turned it off and on and it was dead again with no beeps.

 

Anyone know what could be causing this?

Could be failing power supply.

I know that the PSU is fine. I have used it on other computers. Also i can hear whining and clicking. Again, I know it is not the PSU.

If the screen is corrupted, then my next suspect would be the graphics card. Have no idea what kind of video card it might have (AGP or integrated or something else?). Most motherboards do not POST if video card is not detected.

It is integrated and has no AGP slot. I do have a AGP card that works though.

 

It has a ATI 3D RAGE II+DVD which is on the motherboard

corrupt BIOS? or OS? thats my best guess

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

No hard drive plugged in so probably corrupt BIOS. When it is working is there any way to re-flash it?

a usb stick with a new bios should do it if you can get into the BIOS setup or if it has one the backup BIOS

It would switch to the backup BIOS if it had one but it doesn't. Also it only has USB 1.1 speed ports. One last thing. I can hear what sounds like coil whine and clicking. I know it is not the PSU.

fans? whats currently in it? like harddrives CD readers ect..

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

It is not in a case. And has no HDD or CD drive. It has a cooler master heatsink and fan and connects directly to the PSU.

then i have liteally no idea what is making those noices. the only moving parts are the fanns and i have never heard a fan make clicking noices. the coil whine is probably the VRMs

Could the screen corruption and it not posting be a vram related issue?

This is probably capacitors popping. I've been around capacitors as they pop, and the noises you are describing sounds like capacitors, look for any domed caps or even popped tops on capacitors, this would explain your issues as well.

It has a intergrated GPU and I see a long row of chips next to the chip so I think it has its own VRAM

Sounds like some type of bad hardware.  Something shorting out possibly?  It seems like something would be shorting due to it working and not working as you try different configurations with ram and such.

Yes I have. It has these wired smaller than sticks as well as the normal DDR ram.
