I've been out of the loop for about 2 months... have we jumped up from 8gbs ddr3 to 16gbs ddr4 as a standard? Wow... has it changed that much?

ddr4 is a thing now

 

16gb trend is just starting lol

but yea, lots of people are jumping into the 16gb boat now (including me  )

yes, pretty much

everyone is going with skylake builds and DDR4 allows for higher density chips so

a couple of years ago 256gb single stick of DDR4 was demonstrated and speculated that it will be easy and cheap to produce by 2018
