What is the best way to setup a nas server for home???

Like, do you already have hardware?

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Linus really likes unRaid because this enables you to virtualize and have a NAS without creating another VM and installing a different os on it.

If you aren't going to use it for NAS and something else and you do have enough memory go with freenas.

Keep in mind, FreeNAS LOVES Memory, you should have at least 1GB for each TB of storage.

Then freeNAS, cuz freedom and btrfs/zfs depending on where you want to go, older video though

Hope you got ECC if you care about your data, and ya, you want a lot of RAM

What's your hardware? I also hope you bought NAS hard drives

Hello sauer119 :)

What are you  going to use for the NAS itself (what is the hardware)? What will you be doing with this NAS (file sharing, hosting a server, media streaming, backups, etc.)? Any preference to the OS, file format, redundancy level, speed, etc? What storage drives will you be using?

Have you considered a pre-built NAS solution? These can be quite useful and better for simple home usages and are much easier to setup and maintain. WD My Cloud is a pretty good example of such a NAS.

Hi,

FreeNAS is a great option, but own downside to having a FreeNAS server is that it requires 8+ GBs of RAM. You could also install Ubuntu Server, Webmin, and Samba and it will consume a lot less memory, while it will have less features.

I'm a blogger, student, and developer. I love re-purposing old hardware such as PCs, routers, and phones.
