And it's basically as Vitalius said. When the original FMA was airing, they caught up to the manga that was released and went off on their own tangent. A creative tangent, at that. Brotherhood is simply a remake of FMA that follows the original story from the manga almost perfectly. I think both versions are excellent in their own right.

 

Don't forget to watch the movies though! Conqueror of Shambala finishes off the story for the original series and then there's The Sacred Star of Milos to watch after Brotherhood (as well as an OVA collection).

it is a different take on the story both good brother hood is closer to the original story in the books and brother hood is said to be better

I prefer first anime series over Brotherhood. Since I don't have time or will power for reading manga, I feel like Brotherhood has bit too much things happening and too many sidestories. It can be good thing since it makes you wonder all possibilities. But I liked first one more. Ending was way better than in Brotherhood.

 

You should watch Conqueror of Shambala. It is The End moment thought not the best in story.

I've watched both. Liked Brotherhood for the details and such, but liked the other for pure nostalgic sake. If you're going to get into the movies. The Sacred Star of Milos is better than CoS imo.
