Hi Guys,

I'm currently running an Asus P8P67LE Motherboard, Intel 2500-K processor and 8GB of 1600Mhz DDR3 RAM.

I'm tempted to go for a big bang upgrade of the lot to bring me up to Skylake and DDR4.

So being on i5 for so long I want to be part of the i7 master race and go for a 6700K

DDR4 I'm happy to stay around the 8GB mark to save cost, if 16GB is not much more then I'll go for that

The big one I'm stuck on though is the motherboard. I currently don't use SLI and have no immediate plans to, but would like the ability to do so.

I found this and it's relatively cheap. http://www.ebuyer.com/727413-asus-z170-e-socket-1151-dvi-hdmi-8-channel-audio-atx-motherboard-z170-e

Seems good, it supports 2-way SLI, has a USB-C port (useful for my Nexus 6p) and has a PCIE M.2 port which could be good for the future.

What do you all think? Is it worth forking out more initially for a different motherboard? For £117 this motherboard seems like an absolute bargain to me, but for someone who hasn't shopped for a new motherboard for about 3-4 years I'm not too sure what to look for anymore

Cheers!

Do you do anything other than game? Because DDR4 isn't worth it for gamers, and an OC ready i5 will beast all modern games at stock speeds.

I suggest getting a 4690k and 16gb of DDR3 1600. Those specs wont be a bottleneck for years. And when they finally do become an issue, just OC your CPU.

If you do video editing like everyday, or use intensive programs regularly, get an i7.

But if you just game, watch videos etc.. just stick with DDR3 and i5.

DDR4 doesn't make a noticeable difference in games.

The mobo is fine,

id go with 2x8 gb sticks of ram though.

Ram is cheap right now, youll still have 2 slots to upgrade in the future, 4gb sticks are too small and some games already have a 8gb ram minimum requirement.

Make sure to sell your old stuff, the i5 2500k still is worth quite some cash (since its not that bad really).

Interesting, thanks guys.

I do do some video editing, and that's actually something that's sparked me to take a look at all this. Exporting a 20 minute video took an hour and 15 minutes which was just painful.

Apart from that it's alright, maybe it's worth overclocking for the near future rather than forking out £400 on new gear?
