Im assuming by $ you meant US$.

You could save some money. I added a CD drive since office use (you never know). Splashed out a bit on a hybrid SSHD drive since it will make office tasks seem much more snappy than a base 7200RPM HDD. The 1TB was only US$20 cheaper so I just slapped a 2TB in.

AMD is an option but $300 puts you comfortably in skylake i3 terratory.

thank you for your reply. isnt it better to get AMD in this case? (im not fan of AMD either, just asking) cuz they have more Cores for less price. and no its lower than 300$, we have optical drive as well :)  and yes i meant US $

you can go for a athlon x4 845 with the new 95w cooler and fm2+ motherboards are very cheap.

psu depends if you wanna add a gpu. if your in europe there are some cool system builder deals from be quiet.

8gb of kingston valueRAM should be enough if he is not a tab monster or heavy multitasker.

with a 250gb ssd im at 225€ here in germany but obviously that depends.

if you have more money you can go for a six- or octa-core

Desktop Build Log http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/486571-custom-wooden-case-with-lighting/#entry6529892

you really need an ssd! and the i3 is just too expensive if you dont need single core performance which you dont need in office

No. The direct equivelent to the i3 is the 6 core AMD FX 6xxx. That chip is about 5 years old now released in mid 2011. Thus it has 5 year old tech and power draw which is NOT what you want in an office computer. i3 will perform just as well but with much lower power draw & thermals (thus less noise). It is also easily upgradable if he finds he wants more horsepower in future, the AM sockets are a dead end.

It is missing HDD storage as you didn't say anthing about its use I assumend it is going to be an office machine which doesn't need much space. Do you need Windows? Peripherals?

the problem is its twice the price for the same performance.

believe me an ssd will make an office pc way faster than the little more horsepower you get from an i3

yes you are right, 250GB will do just fine i think, though HDD is very cheap in my country so i will buy it from here,  rather than Amazon

No its not. In multi threaded workloads the i3 just edges out the 6 core FX.

http://www.cpu-world.com/Compare/350/AMD_FX-Series_FX-6300_vs_Intel_Core_i3_i3-6100.html

Cant cite the US prices off the top of my head but the i3 is priced at £85 here and the FX6300 is £77.

FX4000 is half the price but JUST edges above the dual core none HC pentium in performance. i3 wipes the floor with it.

I just used the 250gb instead of 120 since it is only 30 bucks up from already 50 to start with. You can do that but I would gte at least 1TB if I can. Lower capacities are just to expensive for what you get. and extra sapace is never that bad. If cost is your main concern, well do how you please. I told you what I would to and why.

Quite a good idea to ditch the i3 for a little bit of degraded performance but now an acceptable level of SSD storage. I like you sir.

it depends on what you do with it. if you store videos or something really big you will need a hdd. but otherwise your fine with 240gb. 120gb even if your on linux.

the pentium g4400 maybe more efficient but it has no multi-threading so its way slower.

its the pentium anniversary vs. 860k all over again

A Core i3 will be more responsive than a Pentium, but the SSD should make up for it. A ssd can even bring in new life to a old PC.
