What does the i5 2500 use socket wise? I think that it is 1155 but I want to check before buying...

1155, if you're updating the newest CPU you can get for that socket is the i7-3770k or the E3-1230v2 Xeon. The Xeon is supported on pretty much every  1155 board that supports Ivy chips and is basically a locked i7 at a lower price. You can still get them new but because they were cheaper at retail than i7's the prices for used ones should be better than prices for locked i7's.

The i5-2500 is fairly outdated. The i5-2500k holds up due to overclocking, which the non-k can't do. Make sure you know what you're getting into.

I just have it lying around and I'm going to use it for a secondary small form factor gaming PC. Probably paired with a 370. Maybe a little video playback and simple editing of 1080p vide and editing some photos.

For or the most part it will be a low end gaming rig. To my understanding the 2500 is on a similar level of performance to the i3 6100 which is well fine for what I plan to use this rig for.

I have the CPU and not the motherboard. I just want to have. Use for the CPU instead of let it sit around doing nothing,
