I recently just built my first PC, it was a lot of fun :D

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/wfzVhM (specs)

I want to overclock my CPU to 4.4Ghz for better performance, and I am going to be completely honest, I'm scared I'm gonna mess something up big time. I also would like to know if I should get water cooling before I overclock, so the CPU has less of a chance of breaking/overheating. Is this necessary? I think my cooler is meh but I think water cooling looks better and performs better, so I am currently finding room to buy that if it is necessary.

(If you couldn't tell from my terminology I'm kind of a n00b compared to everyone here)

set Vcore voltage to 1.3V and see how high you can raise the CPU Ratio (given temps stay within check)

When you set a Ration and BSOD when benchmarking, take it back a level and test that, if it does BSOD again keep that.

BTW a BSOD wont hurt anything (potential data loss if you dont save open documents or stuff though)

How do I check the CPU temperature on windows 10 without going in bios? I have some things to learn...

download MSI afterburner, you can use windows but afterburner is far superior.

I don't think you can OC on a H97 board, but I may be wrong.

I'm not sure if you can either. I attempted keeping this build below $1,300 and the motherboard had to suffer. It only has room for 1 GPU and it may not be overclockable, ugh :/

You definitely missed out on purchasing a Z97 board for your unlocked processor, which could have put you up a measly $10-20 extra but gives you the flexibility to use your processor to its full potential. If you are able to, I would return your motherboard and purchase a Z97 board instead before your return window is over. Otherwise, you would've been fine with a locked i7/i5 and cutting your total cost by doing so as well.

CPU: Intel i5 4690K (3.5GHz, base-clock) Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO Mobo: Asus Z97-E RAM: (2 x 4GB) Kingston HyperX Fury Black DDR3-1600 GPU: Asus Radeon R9 380 STRIX Case: Corsair 200R PSU: Thermaltake SMART 750W HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB

Awww, I don't think I'm going to do that. I don't really need to overclock but it would be nice :). You also said its "full potential". Does this mean I am still able to overclock just not at well I possibly can? I don't want to overclock to like 4.6-4.8Ghz, just a 4.4Ghz. Do you think I can still overclock on it? I am pretty sure this processors full potential isn't 4.4Ghz, so it still may be possible. But hey, I have no clue what I'm talking about...

The power delivery of your MSI H97 board might not be sufficient enough to support overclocking. In addition, your BIOS would not support it unless you modify it. Overclocking on H-series boards is not recommended. You would've been fine with a standard 4790, unless you got the K for cheap.

Dang, what are you planning on using your computer for (just general usage and gaming, or intensive applications such as audio/video editing and production)?

I mainly game on it, I usually pull off 100+ fps on a 1080p 60Hz monitor so any frame rate above 60 doesn't make a difference, I just wanted to overclock because I would like to start streaming and I know OBS is really CPU heavy.

That sounds reasonable then for getting the i7 4790K, since the hyper-threading helps a lot with high bit-rate streaming. Just unfortunate you can't overclock it for now... maybe when Haswell becomes more obsolete, the motherboards might come for cheaper and you can upgrade to a Z-series then (which would allow you to overclock and make your computer last a bit longer without feeling the need to upgrade!)

My computer is only like a month old and replacing the mobo already sounds a bit to much, I'm not experienced at all and I pretty much have to take apart the entire system to upgrade the motherboard. Don't think I will do that just yet but I will probably upgrade sometime in the future (like maybe a year or so). Thanks for the help! <3

Hey, I found this motherboard for a decent price. Pretty sure it supports my processor and 2 GPU's in case I want to do that later. I think it overclocks as well. Also, not that expensive. https://pcpartpicker.com/part/msi-motherboard-z97pcmate

Good find! Unfortunately, the MSI Z97 PC MATE actually does not support multiple GPUs for SLI/CrossFire. It will let you overclock your processor, but that's about it. It's basically a Z-series model of your current motherboard. You could get the ASRock Z97 EXTREME4 for about $100, which is just ~$10 more than your current motherboard, that supports SLI and overclocking. https://pcpartpicker.com/part/asrock-motherboard-z97extreme4

Thanks for the help man, I think I will save up and buy this mobo, water cooling and a 144Hz monitor all at the same time. Sounds awesome!
