£150 Build

CandleJakk

Hi!

I'm saving up for my main rig which will cost around £530. However, in the mean time, I want to build a decent PC.

I was planning to use an i3 550 + HD 6950, I saw a YT vid about it (can't remember who made it or video name, sorry).

Anyway, could you suggest a cheap £150 build?

Planning to buy used, mostly.

Thanks!

It really depends what you can find used.

Also, do you already have any parts?

i have an hp a6421.uk but recently discovered it won't boot... also the only bit I would be able to keep of it would be the case as the cpu is extremely outdated so would need new mobo n stuff

edit - i'm assuming it's the psu that is stopping it from booting btw... correct me if i'm wrong

What about its drive?

What type of RAM does it use?

DDR2 is good.

Look at getting a used Core 2 Quad + Mobo

If you need something now, but have money coming in the near future, I recommend you go LGA1151 and stick to the iGPU of the CPU, and focus on parts that you won't have to replace. This is what I'd suggest, assuming you're going to replace things in the near future. Remember, if you replace things 1-2 years from now, that's no good as the socket will likely change. I'm talking the near future.

....bad news? I really couldn't make the first build as cheap as 150. That's just way too low. This is the cheapest I could do:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Pentium G4500 3.5GHz Dual-Core Processor  (£64.98 @ Novatech)
Motherboard: MSI H110M Pro-VD Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  (£45.99 @ Ebuyer)
Memory: Crucial 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory  (£25.99 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: Kingston HyperX Fury 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  (£35.99 @ Amazon UK)
Case: Fractal Design Core 1300 MicroATX Mini Tower Case  (£36.95 @ Amazon UK)
Power Supply: EVGA 500W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply  (£44.37 @ Amazon UK)
Total: £254.27
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

But on the plus side, the second purchase would only have to be this to make it great:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor  (£164.34 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  (£37.99 @ Amazon UK)
Video Card: XFX Radeon R9 380 4GB Double Dissipation Video Card  (£159.98 @ Novatech)
Total: £362.31
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Shame cos you could have made  a much better build with that extra money

could try get a PC for £20, take it apart, and rebuild it to prove to your parents

I question the point of even trying to get it to boot again.

I recommend you cannibalize the drive, RAM and case.

Look for used DDR2 CPU/Mobo combos, Core 2 Quads were amazing CPUs that hold up well even now.

If you're lucky, you can cannibalize the PSU as well, get the used Core 2 Quad/Mobo and find a used GPU for the rest.
