pfSense VM

Can I put pfSense inside a virtual machine on my computer? I need to do a thing for school and my original plan won't work. Im afraid this wont work because I need it to be the router for my switch and my desktop, and I only have 2 ethernet ports I can use (1 on mobo and 1 expansion card), as well as i need wireless to it. What can I do?

It would be complicated and need to have some software defined network. I believe os hosting would have to be above the pfsense router but other vm can be bellow the pfsense (on network connection).

And if this has not been changed, pfsense is really bad at been an ap
