Keep R9 280x or sell it for R9 380 2 GB

dokii

Hy guys,I started this topic on reddit and I got mixed opinion,I wouldnt upgrade but the problem is I have 7 months of warranty left on R9 280x and used in my country is around 200 euros which is pretty good for older card and R9 380 2 GB with 3 years warranty is also 200 euros.

After researching and watching dozens of videos and reviews,I find that R9 280x is stronger in terms of raw power but will lagg behind R9 380 in DX 12 games, also freesync,4K resolution,TrueAudio, lower TDP and etc.

My R9 280x is Gigabyte revision 1 with stable clocks up to 1150/1550 ( elpida memory ).R9 380 which I plan to buy if I choose to sell R9 280x is MSI Armour 3 year warranty.

The question is will R9 380 perform same as R9 280x when I overclock it and will 1 GB less of VRAM stutter in games ( my resolution is 1680x1050 but I plan to buy full HD monitor ).

So what do you guys think,I dont really to do,R9 380 prices dropped significantly and only thing that worries me will 2 gigs of vram present issue in upcoming AAA games ?

For 4 GB R9 380 I should add 40 $ which is too much, used GTX 970 with warranty is like 300 $,R9 290 I can find for around 270 $ but my PSU present problem.

Rest of specs are : i5 3470 4.00 GHz

Gigabyte Z68APD3

3x4 GB DDR3 1600 MHz

SSD AND HDD

XFX 450W PRO

To summarize, will I lose perfomance if I switch to R9 380 and will 2 gigs present issue ?

Many people suggested me to wait Polaris and Pascal which should have better perfomance per watt and I could stick higher end Polaris  GPU in system because TDP will be lower.

Thanks

The R9 380 is just a rebranded R9 285, which is not as good as the 280x.

2 gigs of VRAM is not enough imo, as 3-4 is the sweet spot right now

if your upgrading upgrade to the r9 380x tonga xt(2048 cuda core and more effecients), as is newer version of the 280x( 2048 cores tahiti xt core), r9 380 is rebranded tonga pro(1792 cuda core and effecient). so if upgrading go 380x otherwise i would stay

I'm always here to help

I would say keep the 280x since you will lose performance going from that going to a 380 2gb, and i am pretty sure that you can run 4k on a 280x, and freesync but they just aren't really feasible for that card.  Maybe consider upgrading when the next gen comes out.

Keep the 280X - maybe look into the 390 or 380X

Will I get same perfomance level in DX 12 titles like R9 380,I read somewhere it has to do with ACE cores ( R9 380 has more because it its GCN 1.2 card and R9 280x has less because it is GCN 1.0 card ) ?

I previously owned GTX 960 and 2 gigs ram didnt cause any problems so I wondered due to delta color compression as I understood 2 gigs with R9 380/GTX 960 is like 3 gigs on R9 280/280 ( if we simplify ).

@j How much faster is R9 380x than R9 280x ( number of sp,rops, tmus same but newer chip ),in comparision videos on YouTube not much difference ?

@SLAYR I thought the same but I got mixed opinions.

The 380X is about 5% faster than the 280X, the 380 is about 10% slower than the 280X. As for VRAM, 2GB ain't enough - regardless of 960 or 380 - it's just too low. Aim for 4GB

200 euro is pretty good for a used 280x, I bought a used vapor x one for 170 or so over a year ago.

Like it was said the 380 would be a downgrade and less futureproof because it only has 2 gb vram,

id say either sell and upgrade or just dont sell it at all.

Guys, one question,is this card ready for RMA ? Previous owner stated that he had these issues in Witcher 3 and he had much stronger PSU and I believe these wasnt cause by PSU lack of power but beggining of broken card ?

Slightly overclocked from 1100 to 1150 and memory from 1500 to 1550,tried to reverting same thing happens.

I gave max +20 power limit.

Also sometimes I get this screen ?
