Help with Minecraft performance

I need help with Minecraft on my PC. Whenever I load up mods or modpacks, Minecraft always seems to lag significantly to the point it is unplayable. I have been trying to play Hexxit from Technic Launcher and whenever I load it up, I lags so much that I can't even move around in the game. I have a really good PC and it's new, I just built it. The weird thing is that I can play any triple A games perfectly with no lag even on max settings. I need help finding out what the problem could be. I listed my specs below.

RAM: Crucial Ballistix Elite 16gb ddr4-2666
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO 250gb
Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce gtx 980 G1 Gaming
Power Supply: Corsair HX850i

Have you assigned more RAM to Minecraft?

I think it defaults to 2GB you should at least assign 8GB+ as you have 16GB at your disposal.

yeah before we do anything else, check you are using 64 bit java and have assigned at least 4 GB to minecraft in the launcher.
