I done know when this started happening but suddenly my CPU started overheating all the time and it leads to low FPS in a game (fps spikes) and freezing of simple stuff like web browsing or even copying files for a few seconds at a time. my CPU is an i3-4160 and I am using an intel stock cooler with the stock thermal compound. there are 2 case fans, one at the top and back of the case and one at the bottom front which is being blocked by a hard drive and SSD bay with one SSD and one HDD in there. it was running at about 61C while I was writing this with Outlook, Spotify, Skype, Trend micro, f.lux and steam open in the background and it froze about twice. another cause for freezing i have noticed is 100 % cpu usage with also happens alot of the time and also looks to be half the cause for the high temps.

can you check task manager to see whats hogging all the cpu resources?

maybe its time to do a clean install of windows to remove any potential bloatware you have?

meanwhile you can try purchasing thermal compound and do a thermal compound re-application

or just buy a cheap cooler like the 212 evo, it'll drop your cpu's temps by quite a bit

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

tried checking task manager, don't see anything that's actually using any CPU. my dad is the system admin, I am not an admin and he says no to system restore. I am thinking of buying some thermal compound for $10 (AUD) from my local MSY store. I wont be able to buy a cooler because they are quite expensive here in Australia (I prefer us dollar). although is I was going to get a cooler at all it would be a H80(i) or a 212 Evo.

how different is this to the 212 evo? http://www.msy.com.au/cooling/12558-coolermaster-hyper-212x-universal-cpu-cooler.html
