Hi Everyone,

I had bought a Samsung EVO 500 GB to replace a smaller Kingston V300 240GB SSD. The EVO won't be delivered till mid next week, but so I've time to plan in advanced.

The V300 is my C drive with Windows 10 and its currently about 80% full. I notice there are 2 partitions, the C drive and a D (System Reserve) drive.

As this is my 1st time doing a cloning, I just would like to know what are the best practices to ensure it get completed safely with no loss of data.

- I will be doing a full backup before proceeding.

- What cloning software (preferably freeware or open source) would you personally recommend, or should I use the Samsung Magician that came with the EVO?

- Should I plug in the EVO to my system via SATA or externally via USB (I have a USB to SATA adaptor, power via USB) to perform the cloning? Does this matter? My system is a DIY desktop.

- Any pre and post checks that should be performed? I guess if I do get Windows to boot from the EVO after swapping the drives then that would be a success wouldn't it?

- Did I miss anything?

Thanks for reading this post and I'll appreciated all the help. Cheers.

I use GParted.  Basically, shrink the partition of the source SSD drive as much as you can.  Use the provided to secure-erase the target SSD (make sure you get the right drive!!),  Then use dd from the command line to copy the shrunk partition over.   And then expand the target SSDs' partition to the balance of space on the drive.

Basically, this preserves TRIM, conserves write cycles, and resizes everything to the correct size.
