I was wondering if you guys could look at my list of parts and tell me what you think of it. Specifically, I just want to make sure that the CPU and motherboard are compatible, but any other feedback would also be greatly appreciated!

the 390 is the same price and a faster card with double the memory. The 212 comes with thermal paste that will get the job done, and why a dvd drive? Everything else looks fine.

You might be better off with the R9 390, but its your decision.

Does the thermal paste come already installed on the cooler, or does it come with a tube of it?

it comes with a tube, with enough for like 5-10 applications.

Also, I was thinking about a r9 390x instead of the gtx 970, but my only concern is the heat. If I don't plan on overclocking, do you think it will be an issue?

even with a high overclock heat isn't even close to an issue. At least on my MSI and (friends) Sapphire cards, I cant speak for the other brands coolers. My 390x runs cooler than my friends 970s during normal usuage at times.

Do you know if the Sapphire card would be too long for my case, or if it would fit? I know that they are pretty long cards.

It should fit, but it will be a close fit. If you want the fans on the HDD cages like it shows, You will probably have to take out one of the two sections of HDD cages to install the fan and fit the GPU. Thats only a problem if you dont like the look or need more than three HDDs. Worst case scenario you need to remove a drive cage.

EDIT: the sapphire card fits in this case even with the drive cages if you want a reference https://pcpartpicker.com/part/rosewill-case-riseglow

If I may ask, what was the reasoning behind the Z97 mobo and the big power supply? I can totally understand wanting to have options for future SLI, but if you bump up to skylake with a nice Cryorig cooler and a nice mobo (no SLI), with a slightly cheaper case (all personal opinion, you can feel free to stay with yours), and a high quality but cheaper psu, you can fit a R9 Fury into here. The R9 Fury is very powerful, and it also runs fairly cool and quiet, always a nice bonus. I personally am a proponent of going for the highest single gpu when possible.

Again, this is just a suggestion, may not be the best for your circumstances.

Would you recommend any other brand of 390x that are shorter?

MSI if you want a short card, Sapphire if not. I personally like the look of the sapphire card more, but I got my 390x for free as an RMA replacement after getting 2 defective MSI 7970 Lightnings.

I don't really know a whole ton about motherboards, but the reason for a larger PSU was so if in the future I wanted to run two GPUs in SLI I could. Do you recommend any other motherboards instead?

EDIT: I edited the list to include a 390x instead of a 970.

Also, I change from 16 gigs of RAM to 8. What are your thoughts now?

Looks good to me. I would suggest a Cryorig Cooler though, maybe the H7. They look better IMO, and perform just as well or better than the 212.
