Speeding up wifi

Im wonder if anyone can help me try and get more out of my wireless on 300mb as im maxing out around 216mb/s.....

Im using a HP laptop with an intel wireless ac3165 adapter and an ASUS RT-AC87u router.

Wired im hitting 305 - 317mb.

 

P.S. Im connected to the 5Ghz network.

Unfortunately there is little to nothing you can do. The reason you aren't getting higher speeds has to do with the attenuation of the wireless signal, since its wireless it isn't focused on one area but instead it is radiated out from the access point. There is also interference with other existing radio waves and objects such as walls that weaken the signal

Im aware how wifi works but on Wireless AC i was expecting to get more than just 216mb especially when advertised speeds are very much higher.

Those speeds on the box are the theoretical max speeds. They would never put real world speeds on the box, because higher numbers sell better. You are getting about as good as you are going to get. 

 

Also, your speeds in the original post are in megabit, not megabyte, right?

On wireless I expect to get 1/3 to 1/2 of the rated speed. Thats just how things are.

Hmm... by chance after a post on another forum, I tested my similar setup with an Asus RT-AC66U earlier today. On cabled side is my desktop, with a large file on an M.2 SSD (2 GB/s). On wireless side is my laptop with a M.2 SSD (~550 MB/s), which has AC wifi and reports a connected speed of 433 Mbps (I guess the full rated speed relies on all 3 antennas working together, but the laptop just had one). Doing a Windows file transfer from desktop to laptop, I peaked around 160 Mbps. The laptop was <1m from the access point. Was kinda hoping for more.

 

I haven't tried diagnosing further. I suppose I should have also tried a wired connection to prove the limit is the link and not elsewhere.
